ok dacrone, thanks - will give it a try. Can't get the auto hotkey to work? we pinned it to the taskbar, looking at settings. changed the windows settings, seems like the snipping tool does not like chrome? puts a circle around the 3 dots top far right.... thanks

no i can make an AHK, but winaero already has one made. thats all his .exe is... its an ahk compiled to exe

looking at settings. changed the windows settings
what settings did you change?

seems like the snipping tool does not like chrome? puts a circle around the 3 dots top far right
not tracking what you're saying. the ahk will just take an entire screenshot, including taskbar and all. its not tied to one window/program like Alt+Prtsc is

@dacrone I need to find a website with a test box to see this tool - I've been using IrfanView 64 since 1998.

yeah you enable prntsc to take the screenshot. but not sure what you're talking about with chrome, nor with:

find a website with a test box to see this tool
all it does is capture your screen and save it to your Pictures\Screenshots (unless you changed the snipping tool default location). you can open the output with any image viewer....

I would like to crop it, I don't want to post a huge pic of something that's small - like everytime I hit print screen, I would get that circle around the 3 dots. I can live with that.... let me do some reading & testing it out. thank you for the help.... EDIT: see post 5 above -

ok made this real quick (ahk > exe). launches snipping tool screen capture selection. will dim screen and you highlight the portion you want screenshot and it will autosave to your default screenshots location (pictures\screenshots unless you changed it)

The new snipping tool has been nothing but a PITA for me
For anyone who comes across this, another option is to use the old snipping tool from Windows 10. The only caveat is that once a screenshot is saved, you have to right click on screenshot and choose "edit in paint" if you want to mark it up. That's because the old snipping tool edited in Paint3D which we no longer have.
Here it is in my onedrive.
Be sure to read the readme file enclosed.

When you go to save a screenshot, choose save as. It should show you the location where your screenshots are going and give you the opportunity to direct a different location where you want to save that particular screenshot. If you have saved your missing screenshots as .png files go to
C:\users\yourusename. In the search box type .png
I should search your entire user account and show you every .png file you have saved in your user account and its location.

Greenshot

Somewhat older (09 Aug 2017), but still very usable. It is freeware (Open source).
I read somewhere in the Internet that in the program there would be advertising. I have never been able to discover any.

The program works perfectly. You can assign key combinations for complete window or define an area. You can specify what format to save in and the compression of jpgs.

Automatic saving is possible as well as repeating the last screenshot. You can specify what folder the screenshots have to be saved and what numbering should be used (in case of automatic saving). Very flexible.
