SD card write protected only with laptop

I've got this SD card, actually micro-SD with an adapter, that I use with my 3D Printer. I've been using it with my Win 11 laptop since last summer. Now for some reason the laptop says it's write protected. The thing is, it works fine in the printer and in my Win10 desktop. I've tried removing the write protection with DiskPart. It says it removed it but the laptop still says it's protected when I try to copy files to it. Tried using a different adapter. Triple checked the lock switch. Any ideas?

For giggles and grins, have you tried another sd card to see if Windows 11 shows it as write protected? Also try a flash drive and check.

Welcome to Eleven Forum

If it says the same for two different adapters, then it sounds like the micro-switch or LED in the laptop that detects the position of the lock switch may be blocked or faulty. Try blowing out any fluff/dust that may have got in.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Thanks I've been coming here since Eight Forums.
So I tested some more SD cards and it turns out they all have the problem. See I'm usually reading files off of them. I don't normally write to them so I guess I didn't notice the problem there. I tried blowing in the slot a couple times. No luck. At least I know the problem seems to be the slot, not the card. Thanks.

Since you don't usually write to them, are you sure these cards haven't always been write protected and you're just now finding it out. Cameras can write protect sd cards. Can you write to the card using your Windows 10 machine?

Yes, I just double checked. The Win10 machine can write to all of the cards. I read a post online where someone had the same problem and it was suggested to put a piece of tape over the lock switch so I tried that. No luck.

If SD card works on one pc, and other devices, then card is ok, and it sounds like an issue with sd reader slot on W11 pc.

It could either be a driver issue with SD card slot - try updating drivers in device manager.

Worse, it could be a hardware fault with sd card reader. As these are usually integral to mobo, I doubt there is anything you can do

If driver update does not work, simplest option is to buy a usb to sd card adapter.

Yeah, I know, I was replying to Glasskuter. Just to make everything clear. I have a couple of full size SD cards and a couple of micro-SD cards with adapters to make them full size. They plug directly into a slot in my laptop. If I can't solve this I may need to use a USB card reader.

That would be a practical solution. I use that for my main machine as it has no SD reader of its own.

If you fill in your system specs here: https://www.elevenforum.com/account/system-specs with the make and model of your laptop we can look up any servicing manuals. There may be more that you could do to get it's slot working again.

There are several different models of your HP Envy x360. The 13" ones come with a micro-SD reader. With a standard SD reader yours appears to be the 15" version, like this one:

The Maintenance and Service Guide manual from the link above appears to show that your SD card reader is an integral part of the main board. There's little more you can do apart from opening it up for better access to try cleaning the reader.

If you got the laptop last summer then it should be less than a year old and still be in warranty. If so then contacting HP Support would seem your best course of action.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
