Security of passwords in Edge

I mostly use chrome but I find that lately it hasn't been that great to use, weird behaviour and stability issues.
I just reinstalled windows 10 a few weeks back hoping that would help...it didn't.
So the other day I thought might as well see how Win 11 is, It's been good so far and I've bene very happy with it.

Now since Edge came out I've used it off and on, using it more as time goes by, but in many respects I still use chrome because it is also my password manager for some common sites.

What I would like to know is are there any good sources for how good the security is on Edge?

Reason I'm asking is while I could search I will find some random result or opinion, but many here know of good sources for that kind of thing.

Edge encrypts the passwords, so they cannot be seen in plain text. But like any browser password manager, if someone has access to the machine, they can log in to any site that has a saved password

You can set a master password which will require you to enter that password to enable the saved login information for each site you wish to log in. Since the master password is the windows login, it's protected by Defender...at least in theory

There are always ways to view passwords, I believe if you open the browser in Linux, it won't ask for identification. Also since the master password is the windows login, that can be changed as well. I'm of a mind that if someone has physical access to your system, then you have bigger issues than passwords, unless your system is in a shared area and someone with access is authorized to be in that area

Bottom line, saving passwords in Edge is relatively safe, especially if you set the master password

@A Guy Thanks, some really good info in here for anyone else that may wonder the same thing.

Imho only!!
I have nothing to hide on any forums (a hobby from the past, I belong to several)
I have, for the sake of my fading memory, the same password on all. It matters little to me, who can see what I have contributed.

Yes. That same as me.
Many if us don't want to have hassles with password and getting used to work with identical characters and numbers, or at least with it's combinations. My main concern is, trying to never set similar password for social media accounts with the rest, including clouds and e-banking. We are aware that social media account is often required for some apps and online games. And it has the risk for data breach. I have it sync across 6 devices. Thanks to banking that only use phone number for confirmation.
Bottom line is. Whether with Chrome or Edge, be cautious when using shared system. Not everyday we remember to log in and out.
Yes I had been careless few times, and my secretary was able to open some sites with password autofill that belongs to me. 😂

@CB I don't think my job requires a secretary :)

I have never once used the same passwords for personal stuff like banking as I do with generic website access, however for both I pick something completely unrelated to me as a person. So even if you knew me, my hobbies, interests and entire back catalogue of reading lists and movies I liked I choose words or phrases that aren't used.

for example I have zero interest in Knitting couldn't tell you anything about it. so I would choose a few words used in that mixed with numbers and symbols to create a password. That way should someone try to guess based on anything they knew about me the person would end up very very lost and so far from the actual password.

Many don't take password security seriously, which is why I asked the question above, Edge being a newer browser I wasn't sure how well it stacks up in that regard.
The first answer provided was brilliant at covering the points.

@Ptolomios
Agree. We mostly will put a trust based on reputation. Edge haven't been of my choice. I live with Chrome, but even so, few days ago I read some warning on Forbes site about some issue in Chrome security and advised to update as Google has made some fixes. And it's true the update was there.
Just like you, I have all e-banking passwords totally have nothing to do with me.

Remembering too many password is really a problem to most people I had some friends who have to walk in to the bank few times to recover their locked account because of failing to submit the right one.

BTW. I retired this January. No more secretary snooping around my workstation at least. 😉

I should emphasise, from my earlier post. It only applies to forums. Banks etc are an entirely different matter.
