Should I be concerned about the unsupported hardware on my PC when 23H2 arrives?

Helluw!

Because my PC runs on unsupported hardware, I'm a BIT cautious about getting the dreaded watermark later on my PC! Because what IF I get that watermark? Or stuff will break on my PC (or even won't start up again?) Few days back I got the pre-install update (that makes 23H2 ready to install) but when the REAL DEAL arrives... I dunno... Should I get a DVD for Linux Mint ready (or any other open-source OS?) Or am I worrying too much and let it all play out?

Nobody knows for sure but expectation is you will have to manually upgrade by downloading iso of 23H2, mounting it as a drive and running setup.exe.

This method bypasses upgrade constraints on unsupported pcs, and no real issues should arise.

You should make an image backup of pc before doing any upgrade.

So I have to then install Windows from SCRATCH and install everything new? Like we say here in the Netherlands: Dikke hoela!

No.
You would do an In-Place Upgrade to get to 23H2, instead.
Should take about 35-40 minutes on your computer.

An In-Place Upgrade "compares" what is installed on the computer, with the Windows ISO image.
Then, it overwrites any corrupted Windows files, with clean copies from the ISO image.
This is how it "repairs" Windows while allowing you to keep your programs and personal files.

This tutorial will show you how to do a repair install of Windows 11 by performing an in-place upgrade without losing anything. If you need to repair or create a new recovery partition or having problems with the Windows 11 operating system on your PC, and the usual solutions will not fix it...

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

DISABLE non-Microsoft:
a) antivirus software
b) firewall software
c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect or AOMEI Backupper Standard
Making a backup is optional, but always a smart move.
Macrium Reflect
AOMEI Backupper Standard (free)

Get the Windows 11 ISO and save it to your desktop...

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will "look" like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations.
Your drivers, programs and data will be intact.

No, but in any case, as you're using an unsupported OS, you're going to have to do some work to get around that. I s'pose you'd like Microsoft to change all its requirements for an OS, just to suit you ?

Well, a backup is not that hard to do and will save you if it doesn't go well.
Do you have a big enough external HDD ?
You can use Macrium Reflect to either image your drive or a backup of your drive.

If it is just the watermark you're concerned with, you are probably familiar with its removal process explained here, How to remove 'system requirements not met' watermark on Windows 11 - Pureinfotech I recently had to do an in-place upgrade repair on my unsupported laptop (sfc /scannow wouldn't work and nothing I found on the web would solve the issue) and the watermark removal worked like a charm, and I'm still getting WinUpdates.

I think it's more likely that the update will fail on incompatible hardware and the system will automatically revert to its current state.
That happened to some of us with Windows 10 Version 1803. Our old computers could not take it and reverted to Version 1709 for the rest of their lives.

i think you are worrying too much. 23H2 thus far hasn't looked like anything really substantial.

With that said, I likely won't update to it for awhile. I'll wait and see what others run into first. Wait for a few patches and the dust to settle and then I'll upgrade my Beelink testing box where I run Windows 11. At this point, rest of my house is still all on Windows 10.

Let me point out that @Ghot post #6 for an inplace upgrade on compatible hardware. For incompatible hardware you have to make an adjustment.
Open notepad and create a zero sized dummy file, name it as appraiserres.dll. (when saving it you have to click the dropdown for save as type to be "all files" for it to accept the .dll extension) Disconnect from the internet, mount the ISO then run Setup.exe.

When you get to the 'Choose how Setup downloads updates' screen, delete C:\$Windows.-BT\Sources\appraiserres.dll and replace it with the one you made. Then select 'not right now' for the update checks and continue with the upgrade. It will skip all the hardware checks and allow you to do the inplace upgrade.

No that is not what I said. Do a repair upgrade which installs new OS but keeps everything. Look in tutorials.

Like we say on UK "read things properly".

For the sake of accuracy, the link on Techspot for "Macrium Reflect Free" which says it is version 8.1.xxxx is not really 8.1 but 8.0.xxx (see image below). A lot of downloads for software specify "free" when in point of fact they really mean "free trial software," which ver. 8.1 is. that is, trial software! This is an infuriating use of the word "free" in my opinion. In this particular case the Reflect version 8.0 is still the free version but Techspot's link page specifically states "Macrium Reflect Free 8.1.7638", which it is NOT!

I've run 11 on a variety of unsupported devices, and I've only ever briefly seen that watermark just the once.

That doesn't work anymore, you still get the ver. 8.0.7279 free trial software. Macrium must have corrected this issue.
