OS
Windows 11 Canary Channel
I wanted to make a copy of the Windows key on my new mini-PC and ShowKeyPlus doesn't show the key. I checked the activation in settings and it's activated with a digital license linked to my MS account. Anyone know why the key can't be found with ShowKeyPlus?

When it's associated with a digital license in your Microsoft Account, there doesn't need to be a key (if you didn't buy/activate via key, they don't create one for it)

Thank you for the reply. With no key showing in the app, I was a little worried about the OS not being legit.

If it says it's activated by a digital license, it's legit. :)

That's very unusual - is the installed key just blank? and no OEM key? Please post a screenshot.

Not unusual. Normal. With a digital license, record of the license is kept on MS servers and is tied to the hardware on your computer. If you use a MS account it is also tied to your account. At any time you can check what devices are registered to your MS account.
To check the list of all devices having access to your Microsoft Account on Windows 11 is as follows:

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Settings.
  2. In the Settings window, go to the Privacy & Security tab on the list on the left-hand side.
  3. On the right-pane, select Find my Device.
  4. You would find an option reading See all devices linked to your account.
  5. This will open a page on the default browser of the system. Log in to the page using your Microsoft credentials.
  6. This page has a list of all devices connected to your Microsoft account. You can find their location, remove the devices, or register more devices from this page.
I believe I read that your can have up to 10 devices associated with your MS account at one time.

Now, if you purchase a retail copy of Windows 10/11 ShowkeyPlus would probably find it because it comes with a product key that is registered during installation and will be in the registry. A purchased copy of the OS is handled differently than a digital license in that it can be moved from one machine to another.

It is unusual, as a product key determines the edition and channel (Retail/OEM) thus the "generic" keys with a digital licence.

This may have changed recently that digital licences are installed w/o a key - that's what I trying to determine.

In the user manual there is a section with questions and answers. There is a question about no product key in the box or an email. The answer was that Windows was already activated with the product key. This is what I see when I run ShowKeyPlus.

You can have more then devices registered. The problem or at least the problem that I have encountered is that you can only use up to 10 devices to install apps from the store. Something that I read years ago was going to be increased and I'm still waiting.

When I first setup Windows I didn't allow access to the internet so that I could choose my username. I don't remember if it was before or after I connected to the internet but when I checked to see if it was activated it was, I don't remember the exact way it was worded. I do know that after signing into my MS account the activation is now tied to my account.

This is what I see when I run ShowKeyPlus.
Your screenshot shows the installed key as 'MAK key not available'. This is correct, being a volume licence key a MAK key is replaced with BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB in the registry once activation has occurred to prevent it being recovered and re-used on many more machines. ShowKeyPlus used to display this key before Version 1.0.6893.

Version 1.0.6893
New features:

  • Added key checking support for new editions in October 2018 update
  • Over-ride the MAK key removal display ("BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB") with explanatory text.

As long as my Key is legit with MS I'm ok with it. I don't want to use bootleg software. If it's not I legit I will buy a Pro key to make it 100% legit.

As long as my Key is legit with MS I'm ok with it. I don't want to use bootleg software.
It appears to be an unusual way for a business to licence Windows on their products, but not unheard of, or for that matter illegitimate. See this thread....

I just bought a new mini PC that came with Windows 10 Pro. I found out that it has a MAK license, not OEM or retail....
...and later:
I contacted Microsoft and asked them about the key. While the rep did verify that it was a MAK volume key, he said that it is actually legal for them to sell units with those product keys....

Anyway, as the MAK key has done its job and this machine is now activated with a digital licence for Windows 10/11 Pro, then you won't need any key to do a clean install.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

In the user manual there is a section with questions and answers. There is a question about no product key in the box or an email. The answer was that Windows was already activated with the product key. This is what I see when I run ShowKeyPlus.

Thanx.. :)

The strange thing here is that, although the Product ID is that of a Win 10/11 MAK, the 3rd set of characters (00000) indicate a default or "generic" key.

I remember upgrading a MAK install once and getting a MAK digital licence, which surprised me, as Volume is not supposed to be included.

I notice you have an upgrade, does that have the same PID?

If you want to see the default key Windows uses run https://github.com/Superfly-Inc/Windows-Diagnostic-Tool/releases/download/1.0.6101/LicensingDiag.ps1

First, check the properties of the PowerShell script and make sure it's unblocked...

then in PowerShell and run the following:
Powershell:
Get-ExecutionPolicy
Set-ExecutionPolicy unrestricted
After you run the app, do:
Powershell:
Set-ExecutionPolicy CHANGE
Where CHANGE = the result from Get-ExecutionPolicy above.
