Skype has zoom now

  • Staff
It has happened to the best of us.

You're in a call and someone shares their screen to show you something. Everyone else is nodding along, but you're squinting at your computer screen trying to read the tiny text they are referencing. It's just too small! 🧐

With Skype's easy zoom in feature, you don't have to miss out. 💃

Skype call screensharing and zooming in on screen with on-screen controls.

You can quickly zoom in with your mouse or with the handy controls on the screen. That way, you can always adjust the shared screen to exactly the size you need.

Get a closer look at a shared screen at any time, so you never miss a detail.

Plus, you'll never have to interrupt the call to use this feature! You can zoom in at any time without disturbing the meeting, and no one else on the call will even know you're doing it.

How to Use the Zoom-In Function

Zooming in with Skype is a cinch! We designed it to work in multiple ways, to help ensure this feature is accessible for all our users.

Here's all the different ways you can use the Zoom-In function:

Press CTRL (on Windows) or Command (on Mac) and scroll with your mouse (⌨️ + 🖱)

Or, you can use the touchpad to zoom in (no keyboard needed)

Or, you can also zoom in with the controls you see on your screen

This feature improves screen sharing and lets you see every last detail of the important documents and files your co-workers and clients share with you.

Give it a try during your next Skype meeting!

I understand the part about Skype now having a zoom option. What I don't understand is why only one person has to squint to read the small text. Wouldn't they all be on Skype and have the same problem?

Do a lot of folks still use Skype? I figured Zoom was what most are using now days. Does one have any benefit over the other?

Skype is still free, but Zoom costs money. At least to the host of the Zoom meeting.

We Seniors who resorted to Skype when the Pandemic started can't afford the steep price for Zoom.

For those who have smaller screens (14" laptops), it's a problem.

To clarify:

Sally has a 14" laptop and wants to share her screen to show something of interest to the participants. I have a 17" laptop screen, or even more likely, I have a 27" monitor on my desktop computer.

Sally's tiny shared screen sits right in the middle of my giant monitor! OMGorsh! My old eyes cannot see that! So, I zoom it up to the point I can see what's Sally's showing us! Fantastic!

I'm 70, I just used Zoom to video/talk to a friend and there was no charge. I guess why it works for me is, I don't need 1000 people in a meeting, and I surely don't want to set in a meeting over 40 minutes long, I mostly just use it for contacting friends and family.

Yeah, I forgot about that. Our Skype meetings are mostly for classes, and although we don't have a large number (only about 15 or so), our meetings do run to an hour and a half to two hours. So, that's pretty much why we can't use it.

I know it can be a problem on small laptop or tablet screens. The example is a very bad example. They say you are at your computer. Not your small laptop or tablet. I don't know of anyone that uses a monitor so small that can't see the text.

Because of Covid the center where my wife goes uses Zoom. Her therapist uses Doxy.me. They both work great.

I think you're misunderstanding what I said, @Winuser.

I am on a 27" monitor, and the person who shares their screen is on a 14" laptop. Soooooo, I get a very small shared screen in the middle of my Skype page!

Which may be fine for those who still have 20/20 vision. I'm not so lucky, so I will be barely able to read . . . which is why I welcome being able to zoom in or out in Skype now,

Our Center will close immediately when someone who has been there in the past couple of days has a positive COVID test.

One of the members of a band that plays and sings for us got COVID and we were closed down for two weeks. Drag out Skype!

I fully expect some breakthrough cases to pop up since Omicron is out there!

I think you're misunderstanding what I said, @Winuser.

I am on a 27" monitor, and the person who shares their screen is on a 14" laptop. Soooooo, I get a very small shared screen in the middle of my Skype page!

Which may be fine for those who still have 20/20 vision. I'm not so lucky, so I will be barely able to read . . . which is why I welcome being able to zoom in or out in Skype now,
You're misunderstanding me. I'm referring to the example in the first post.

Our Center will close immediately when someone who has been there in the past couple of days has a positive COVID test.

One of the members of a band that plays and sings for us got COVID and we were closed down for two weeks. Drag out Skype!

I fully expect some breakthrough cases to pop up since Omicron is out there!
My wife's center has been closed since the beginning of the pandemic. Everything is done online using Zoom.

For those who have smaller screens (14" laptops), it's a problem.
The size of the screen isn't the problem, it's the resolution. If their native resolution is the same as yours or greater, you'll see what they see or better.

My 6.7" phone screen shared over Google Meet to my 27" monitor, however, the phone's resolution is huge!

Our Center is still in the dark ages . . . Our classes are the only ones to use Skype to keep on keeping on.

By coincidence (or Karma) I had been teaching Skype to my students when our Center closed, and we didn't miss a beat! The other study groups didn't have the same options.

I did, however, start a Facebook group of Seniors (CADC wouldn't let us use anything official) in Saline County. It's still ongoing today and will probably last forever.

Has anyone managed to get Skype to zoom in or out by holding down the Ctrl key and spinning the mouse wheel?
