Slow File Explorer Fixed (I hope)

I hope this will help others because all the "solutions" I've seen posted in forums didn't work or were too severe to try (like a reinstall of windows). My windows 11 Pro install isn't typical (see the last paragraph) and may be the real reason I have this problem to begin with but however I got here, this fix worked for me.

Problem:
It was taking about 5 seconds for folders to open each time I clicked one to open it. I would see the spinning curser during those five seconds before the contents of the folder were revealed.

My solution:
I did two things at the same time so I can't tell you which one actually solved the problem for me but after doing these 2 things, opening folders has been instantaneous.

1) The Indexing settings.
  • Go to Settings: Privacy & Security: Searching Windows
  • Scroll Down to select "Advanced Indexing Options"
  • Select "Modify"
  • Look at the top section for the selected locations that say they are unavailable as you hover the curser over them. In my case there were 3 locations with SID names. Deselect any that say, "This location is currently unavailable."

2) Delete and rebuild the index. (There's a tutorial from Brink on how to do this)
Same as above except select "Advanced" instead of "Modify" in the 3rd line.
From there, select "Rebuild" and according to what it says to the left of button, it will delete and rebuild the index.
You'll be warned that it will take a while.
It may not seem like the rebuilding is working because it will say indexing is paused but it will continue when the computer is idle and eventually finish rebuilding.

Like so many things with windows, everyone's configuration is different and maybe that's why so many solutions posted (even those that have responses that say it worked) don't work for everyone. This one worked for me. Let me know if it helped you (and lasted past a few days). I'm only on day 2).

Maybe try one at a time so we can figure out what actually fixes it. I think it's the index rebuild but I had some strange locations selected in #1 above.

My somewhat unique install may be the underlying cause. During install, I moved the Users folder to D:\. I used a Microsoft Account which is the default method but then later I changed the truncated (5-character limit) of my username folder. During that fix I had to enable the Administrator account (and later disable it). Then finally after a week or two, I switched from a Microsoft Account login to a local login. All of that could have easily messed with the indexing and caused this problem with opening folders. But again, no matter how I got there, one or both the steps above have fixed it (hopefully it lasts past me hitting the "post thread" button.)

AFAIK, the Explorer lag and bug is about the transition from win32 to XML!
There was (and is) a drastic bug since Microsoft introduced the new Explorer for Win 11. If you select This PC instead of Home in Folder Option, by clicking on a New Tab button, the new tab will open with a white blinking (also has lag)! If you select Home (Folder Option), the new tab will open smoothly without blinking!

I have had this problem (slow FE) since installing Win 11. Everything I have learned is:
1- Indexing can make it sluggish! (I have disabled the "Service").
2- Windows Security real-time protection has a huge impact on opening folders speed in Explorer.
3- We have to wait till the Fall Update (23H2) and see if the new New Explorer solves the problem.

It seems Real Time Protection will switch itself back on after a time so thats not a long term answer.

I don't recommend disabling it (if Windows Security is the only AV on your system). But you can use the links below to disable it permanently:

Update:
My fix didn't stick. The problem came back several days later. Atinfo (above) is probably correct about it being a bug.
The problem isn't consistent. Sometimes things work well. When they don't, the delay is really annoying. In addition to the folder opening lag and green progress bar taking forever, there are issues with file icon thumbnails.

I'll wait for the fall 23H2 update to see if there are any improvements. If not, I'll try a simple test install on a different hard drive to see if my install was the problem. If not, I'll go back to windows 10 until it's worked out.

It is if you know how to 100% completely disable Defender and all of it's components :)

Don't wait for nothing!
Are you implying that no fix is coming anytime soon?

In the meantime, today I opened file explorer and clicked "Documents" (a pinned folder on the left side) and File Explorer locked up. It just said "Documents (Not Responding" at the top left with the words "Working on it" and a blue circle for a curser. Had to restart explorer.exe. To understate the situation, there seems to be a problem. In addition to slow folder openings, I'm getting freezes and sometimes automatic explorer restarts. Things are not going well.

I follow some guys on Twitte. They are testing every bit of the new Windows 11 updates in the Canary and Beta channels. I have heard (there) that Explorer speed is the same as the current stable version (Stable Channel)

In the meantime, today I opened file explorer and clicked "Documents" (a pinned folder on the left side) and File Explorer locked up.

Try running a Clean Boot. If this works, you can keep it this way, or you can add one Startup Service or Startup Item at a time. If Explorer locks up, you will know that is the culprit.

I'll get around to doing a clean boot is a few weeks.
Right now, File Explorer still consistently locks up when I click on any folder. It hangs until I restart file explorer or restart the machine but the restarts don't seem to help. I need to try accessing folders from a command prompt to see how that goes.

I found 2 work arounds that correct the problem:
1) If the PC has been on for a while, file explorer seems to work.
2) When I disable the network (in my case disabling the ethernet adaptor) it works great. Once the network is disconnected I can open folders quickly with no hanging. When I turn the network back on, it continues working great. Even opening public folders on other PCs on the network works well without any hanging.

Maybe the 2nd one is a clue to where the problem is.

A Fresh Reinstall wont help?

Performing a Clean Boot only takes a couple of clicks and a couple of minutes to enable and designed to troubleshoot issues like yours.

its the same dam thing
NO, a Clean Boot means you disable all the Non Microsoft Services and Startup Items leaving the Windows OS intact to troubleshoot issues with the existing Windows Install.
A Clean/Fresh Install means you Boot off a Windows Installer USB Flash drive, Delete ALL of the partitions so the drive is all Unallocated Space and then Press Next letting Windows create new partitions, format them and install Windows automatically.

Thank you for the information you shared. It helped me get to the bottom of the same issue I had. In my case I traced it to having to users on my server upstairs with the same Microsoft account that I was using for mapping drives on my laptop. The mapped drives failed when clicked on. But what links to what you shared is I had also put the networked drives into the Libraries for Documents, Music, Picture and Videos which caused Windows Search Index to try to index them. So Window Search Indexer kept trying to index things it could not get to.

To fix it I removed the Microsoft Account from one of the Users making it just an only fashioned log in by name User. Removed the networked Document, Music, Pictures and Video links from the Library. Unmapped all the drives. Reset my credentials on my laptop for the server to the correct ones. Rebooted the server and my laptop. And my laptop began working fine again. Subsequently I have successfully remapped the drives. But I wont be adding them to the Libraries.
