Solved Slow keyboard repeat

Using Dell XPS 9700 with Win 11 22H2

My keyboard repeat rate is slow ... and yes I know how to change the repeat rate in the control panel.

I mean that the system is slow and mushy when I hold the arrow key to move the cursor around. Effet is that I often overstep where I want my cursor to go. Not always. Like now, of course, it is OK. But a second ago, gosh, it was killing me.

Tough to explain, sorry. Hopefully someone saw this issue before.

I'm not quite sure exactly what you mean, but am guessing you mean a time delay between pressing a key and the relevant action. When I've had something like this before it has usually been something running in the background - a resource hog. Have a look in task manager and see what's running. In my previous experiences a big one is often One Drive (I uninstall it for that reason, but you may use it). Or a very big windows update downloading in the background.

You could also turn off a lot of background apps that don't need to be running either - then they just start up when you click on them to use them.

Go to settings. Type Installed Apps in the search box. For each app you don't use much - tap on the three dots on the right and select advanced options. Scroll down the window that opens up to "Background app permissions" and set the drop down menu to Never.

I turn off just about everything except Mail, Clock and antivirus and maybe weather. If I want to use the app it starts when I select it. You don't need them all running in the background.

Also assume you've done an antivirus scan and a scan with Malwarebytes free.

OneDrive is a possibility. I did not know about limiting background tasks. I like this one in general. Tks.

Hey @MarathonMax, and welcome to the forums.

In addition to the advice above, it would be a good idea if you filled in your system specifications, in your profile, so people have a better idea of what your system is like, and can ask more pointed questions and help troubleshoot your issue more effectively.

It could be you're using a laptop that has mechanical drives, not hybrid or full SSDs, which means there may be a significant lag because of the programs running. It may be that your manufacturer has loaded up your computer with all sorts of things running in the background that you simply do not need running. It may be that you did not realize that a particular process that you actually do want to have running currently needs a lot more system processing power than you thought it did. it could also be something more nefarious, like a malicious process running in the background.

There are so many different possible causes for your behavior, and understand your system specs will help point in the right direction. Background processes is likely to be a cause, but may not be, it could be a hardware issue (such as CPU throttling due to excessive heat / lack of adequate heat dissipation).

Also, let us know what other steps you may take to try to remedy the situation (and of course, if they work or not).

Thank you @MarathonMax!

Now, can you be a bit more detailed - does this happen randomly, or almost regularly (like, say, every hour or two it happens for a few minutes and then works fine again for the next hour of two, then happens again, etc.)? Does it happen in a certain application, like your web browser, or *any* application?

Guys tks for all your comments. I must conclude that some processes have a CPU spike including OneDrive and BackBlaze.
