Solved Snap, Crackle and Pop

New to this forum and have been on the Win10 since 2021.

I love to take old relics (laptops) and give them a new lease of life, so this time, I have a beast of a machine, a Dell M6400.

Have loaded it with Win 11. I know it's a bit presumptuous, but with 16GB of RAM, it has no issues; slow on start, but once it's all fully loaded, it's nifty and handles Win 11 with no problem.

Now my issue is sound.
When I play any music track or video, or any sounds through the speakers, it sounds like, as per the described title, Snap, Crackle, and Pop, assuming the speakers have blown. I tried it through the headset socket, and it's the same, and through the Bluetooth headset, the same.

So, I can eliminate the speakers.
So, my thinking is it is either the sound card or the driver software.
Here is what I have tried...
1) Loaded Windows Vista (original OS), still the same
2) Removed all audio drivers and let Win 11 load fresh drivers still the same Now I am assuming that this has dedicated audio software/drivers. Now, according to the specs, it is supposed to have an audio controller, IDT 92HD71B. Now I have tested all versions of IDT from Vista to Win 10, but with the same results.

So any suggestions, apart from scarp and buy a new one, would be appreciated.

Find an inexpensive USB audio adapter on Amazon, if you don't want to spend too much money. Sounds like a HW issue.

If you go to the Dell website, it should identify your computer and offer to install the latest drivers.

It was very difficult to find a working IDT driver in 10 so I wouldn't waste my time messing with IDT in 11. I totally agree with @garlin about buying a cheap usb audio adapter and keep on trucking. Be sure to disable the IDT sound though., preferably in bios if possible. Otherwise just disable in device manager.

Thanks, TraderGary, for your help; you are correct; however, it only offers Windows, XP, Vista, and Windows 7; as I am running Windows 11, it does not recognise the OS... I have tried all three to no avail.

If you’re wanting to persist with the driver angle, not that I would normally recommend it but in your case with a Win 7 Laptop; Try a driver update app, like Snappy or CCleaner

Also, I am assuming you looked in Settings>Windows Update>Advanced Options>Optional Updates?

That was blatant false and misleading advertising.
You put Coco Pops in milk and after 30 seconds you have a bowl of wet sponge.

Hi, can anyone confirm this is a sound card for my laptop? The seller insists it's a sound card, but I am sure it's just an audio board and not a sound card. However, if I am wrong, this could solve my problem or confirm this is all down to software (IDT)

It appears to be the "left I/O board". The only audio output I see is a headphone jack.

Download and run Snappy driver Installer ORIGINAL (Note ORIGIN version only)

Only install/replace drivers for problematic hardware issues.
