Hi everyone,

Recently (maybe after the Windows 11 update) I couldn't log in with my admin account even though Windows Hello is working properly and PIN I'm entering is definitely correct. Looks like PIN was just locked.

Here on the photo you can see the screen that I get.

Also, only PIN and no passwords was used on this account, so I don't have a possibility to sign in somehow else or reset PIN.

It's an admin user, so if I'm using another user I'm very limited in what I can do not having admin rights.

What can I do in this case?

Thank you in advance!

Hi, @dimakovbasiuk, and welcome to Eleven Forum (11F).

What shows when you click / tap on sign-in options?

Also, as an aside - this is why you should always have backup methods. It's the same as data backups. Never rely on a single method for logins, as that opens the door to situations like this.

hi @johngalt!
Good evening!
This issue has started 1 month ago after a Windows Update. This is my admin account and I had Windows Hello and PIN set up there as sign in options. Now I understand I should have also used the password. But since that's the admin account and it's locked now I can't do much to fix it.
Completely understand the need to add backup methods, but I just need to fix this issue now to have access to the admin account.
Thank you in advance for your help!

When I try to sign in Windows Hello works well, but the 'Sign in' button is not active.

Sign in options shows Win Hello and PIN
1693685732579.png

Since I've tried to sign in win PIN earlier it asks me to write the Challenge Phrase
1693685802058.png

After I write I can finally write the PIN. I'm 100% sure I'm using the correct PIN, but it says it's incorrect and seems it's just locked after the last update around August 1.

Hi @zbook!
Thank you for your response!
Unfortunately, none of these options work because I just can't access this admin account.
For example I can't reach this folder C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC without the admin access.
And going to Settings to change the PIN is not possible without the admin access as well.

How come you do not have the ability to use admim?

Because this is the admin user that have the PIN locked.
Now I'm using the secondary account. When I try to do some actions like ton C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC - I can't, because the Admin PIN is not working.
I'm 100% sure I enter the correct PIN.
Or maybe I've misunderstood your question.

With Windows Hello, using a camera, as soon as my face is recognized I'm logged in. There is no button to press. Not even an OK, and certainly not the sign in button.

So, I don't understand how you're saying Windows Hello works well.

What can I do in this case?

It's not possible to have a PIN without first having a password.

Try a different keyboard.

Because I sign in successfully to this secondary account I'm using right now with Windows Hello.
It seems that only PIN is locked and unfortunately I don't have a password sign-in turned on to be able to log in the admin user. :(

But that's because you have selected "For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft Accounts on this device (Recommended) at Settings, Accounts, Account settings, Sign-in options, Additional settings; not because you never had a password.

Try a different keyboard.

This is not a solution, just an FYI. I use to have an occasional problem using my pin to sign-in to one of my HP laptops. It wouldn't be recognized and I would have to use my password. It turned out to be a problem with the TPM in the Bios. I had to reset the TPM and setup my pin number in my MS account again. I never had a problem after that.

i suffer with this too despite that it is only me that has an account and its obviously set to administrator, it gets frustrating when i have to restart my laptop before i can log in. it seems to only do it when i come out of standby, i would have thought it was quicker to log in using a "hello" pin rather than typing in my long windows password which was a strong password that i generated using google chrome, i have other issues as well, i installed my games that came out on windows 8 on steam but when i try to launch the games then i get an error message saying that the side-by-side configuration is in correct, most older games work fine, i have watched youtube videos about it and they say things about changing stuff in the registry, ,maybe its just time to do a restore of the operating system. ive tried uninstalling/reinstalling the microsoft c++ redistributable package with no luck. i got my laptop on the 18th december 2023
