Insider Spellcheck in Notepad begins rolling out to Windows Insiders on Windows 11

  • Staff

 Windows Blogs:

UPDATE 4/9: The below update for Notepad (version 11.2402.22.0) that introduces spellcheck has begun rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Beta and Release Preview Channels.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are beginning to roll out an update to Notepad to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11. This update introduces spellcheck in Notepad.

Notepad (version 11.2402.18.0)

With this update, Notepad will now highlight misspelled words and provide suggestions so that you can easily identify and correct mistakes. We are also introducing autocorrect which seamlessly fixes common typing mistakes as you type.

Misspelled word highlighted in Notepad with options to correct the spelling.
Misspelled word highlighted in Notepad with options to correct the spelling.

Getting started with spellcheck in Notepad is easy as misspelled words are automatically underlined in red. To fix a spelling mistake, click, tap, or use the keyboard shortcut Shift + F10 on the misspelled word to see suggested spellings. Selecting a suggestion immediately updates the word. You can also choose to ignore words in a single document or add them to the dictionary, so they are not flagged as a mistake again. Spellcheck in Notepad supports multiple languages.

This feature is enabled by default for some file types but is off by default in log files and other file types typically associated with coding. You can toggle this setting on or off globally or for certain file types in Notepad app settings or temporarily for the current file in the context menu. We’ve organized the settings page as well to make it easier to find and adjust Notepad app settings.

[We are beginning to roll out spellcheck in Notepad, so it may not be available to all Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels just yet as we plan to monitor feedback and see how it lands before pushing it out to everyone.]

FEEDBACK: Please share your feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Notepad.

As always, we love getting feedback from the community. We’re excited to hear your thoughts and continue enhancing Notepad for everyone.

Thanks,
Dave Grochocki, Principal Product Manager Lead – Windows Inbox Apps

I have Notepad v. 11.2402.18.0 and I don't have the option to spellcheck. More A/B testing?

Comparing a clean install of 26085 Canary which had Notepad Spell Check and another machine at the same build that did not have it,
I figure out the id that enables Spell Check in Notepad v. 11.2402.18.0. Same for Canary and Dev.
I disabled Autocorrect in the settings because it makes a mess on text files that have words tied together.
I think I will probably disable both options, I'm not a fan of all the red underlining.
For example, the list of vivetool IDs. 😂😜🤷‍♂️
Here is the ID that does the trick.

vivetool /enable /id:48531596 /priority:service /experiment /store:both

Please -- just keep apps like notepad SIMPLE --IT'S NOT A WORD PROCESSOR (Caps intended) - there's plenty of applications out there to have spell check, A.I or anything else you want -- the beauty of notepad is it's just a nice simple wysisyg text editor. I suppose next they'll be adding paragraph formatting etc to it -- that stuff was already present in wordpad -- M/s just re-instate that app and put all the "features" in there and leave simple apps that work and have stood the test of time alone.

Cheers

Luckily those two options can be turned off.
I think they should leave them off by default.
No thanks MS, I don't need a spelling check when I use notepad for editing tech data. 😝🤷‍♂️

Tried on both Canary and Dev. I sure don't like all the red underlining.

I only tried on my new desktop but both notepad.exe open the new File Explorer.
Try this reg hack:

Code:

;Restore Old Classic Notepad on Windows 11

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\notepad.exe]

@Edwin, I checked and on my old desktop and the notepad.exe in System32 opens the new notepad. I tried it again on my new desktop and now the notepad.exe in System32 opens the classic version. The change must have been made when I installed the classic version.

Weird though, you don't get a New Text Document, (1) entry unless you have the New version installed...,
you have to create your own, (2)...

Enjoy the typos. LOL
I had the spell check and turned it off. It is no good when you are editing technical text files.
Spell check can be nice on word but not on notepad.
For sure I don't want autocorrection that screws up technical stuff.
