Solved Starting over

On my wife's computer, I have an Admin account (MS) and she has a Regular account (Local) because, of course, if I were to give her Admin privileges the box would get mucked up. :eyeroll:

It's become clear that my Admin account has become- shall we say- corrupted. Standard Win 11 functions are messed up. I'd like to fix this. One idea is that I create a new user account and make it an admin account, but I don't know how to migrate my old profile stuff. Any wisdom out there?

IF... that's the case, making a new admin account is a good idea.
But since your old admin account is corrupted, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to "migrate" it to your new admin account.

Things like this are why most of us use 3rd party backup software.

Short version...

Only make a full backup, if you know everything is running clean and tight.

Then if anything breaks or gets corrupted or infected... restore from a backup.
Then..... don't do whatever you did to get things broken corrupted or infected.

With such troubles I usually make a New User Local Account with Admin rights, log/sign out of the original, reboot so as to log into the new account followed by removing the old account and taking its files the reboot. If wanting another more limited account could create a new Local account with Standard rights. User Names as desired but each one has to at least one character from the others and passwords and pins if wanted.

Easiest to just log into the new user acct, browse to C:\Users and drag all your stuff over. Stuff like chrome/edge etc profiles are stored in AppData

Dear All: Can I simply- (1) Make my wife an Administrator pro tempe; (2) Delete my account; (3) Re-make my account; (4) From within my wife's account, make me an Administrator; and finally, (5) Change her back to a Normal account?

Respectfully, I disagree with that. When it comes to a user's files, moving files from one account to another can and usually does create a boatload of permission problems for yourself. There are ways to prevent it.

@TonyCzar I have detailed procedures written out depending on a different user scenarios. I can send the one that applies to you later this evening or tomorrow if you wish but I need you to answer a few questions.
1. You've had a number of threads with varying questions. What issue are you currently encountering that makes you think your user account is corrupted?

2. You indicated your current account is a MS account. Do you use Office 365? Are your personal folders (document, desktop, pictures, and videos) syncing to Onedrive? Is Onedrive folder syncing on or off? Settings>Accounts>Windows Backup>

3. Do you WANT all your files to be in Onedrive rather than on your system drive? If you happen to be one of those who is trying to get away from Onedrive now would be the time, so I need to know to include that. If it is your intention to create a new local account, migrate data, delete the MS account, and then change the local account to a MS account, this is all pertinent.

4. What browser(s) do you use and is it syncing? If it's not, I need to know that to tell you how to export and import your favorites.You can find this in your browser settings. Depending on the browser look for profile or sync.

just create a new user from your current admin acct. can you not access (or do not have access to) computer management? or you can do it from elevated command prompt..

Setting a new/additional User is not difficult if following the steps carefully, just helped with one up North in Edmonton on the phone. As she described it, her issue was so many shops have language/dialect/accent issues.

Adding to what is being said:
Creating a Local account for your wife is fine, unless it is an Admin account instead of a Local Standard User. If you wife is still an admin she can make changes to the computer.

You can try an repair your Administrator account by starting a Command Prompt as Admin and copy and pasting, or typing
DISM /Online /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RestoreHealth and pressing Enter. After that completes, then type
SFC /scannow and press Enter. These commands will repair Windows.

If you still have problems, you can Enable the Hidden Administrator account.

To enable the Administrator account on Windows 11, use the Net User or Get-LocalUser commands or Computer Management. Here's how.

Sign Out as You, and Login as the Administrator. If you no longer have the issues that you had in your profile, than you should follow the instructions for Creating a new Admin account and copying your old profiles files to it. You then can Disable the Previously Hidden Administrator Profile.

Sadly, running these commands did not fix the problems I'm having when signed in on my Administrator account. I think I shall have to nuke that account and create a new one, which hopefully will be fully functional (a tip-of-the-hat to Data).

The answer is Yes. This worked easily and fixed my issue. I am still setting up the new MS-based computer account, but that's always a joy.

I was able to unlink the computer from OneDrive before any damage was done. I then put a stake through its heart.

A minor glitch. After opening what Windows calls my 'Personal Folder' it became evident that I am currently assigned not to user TonyC (which is what I want), but instead to a "temporary" account I'd created (see highlighted folder in the image below). Anyone know how I can re-assign this?
