Startup apps disappeared (They still start up but empty folder)

I reinstalled my system once because my start menu icons disappeared for no reason. Now it's the startup folder that got emptied. I legitimately did not do anything, so I don't understand why it happened.

Any idea how to get them back with a fix or something? Or do I just go through all the programs that start up and add them myself? They still start so I assume there must be a registry somewhere that makes them start up, but the shortcuts are gone from their place.

The startup apps that still open and not in your Startup folder may be referenced at another location in the registry instead.

You can use steps 1 to 3 in option four of the tutorial below to see if it may reveal their location in the registry.

You are running the Insider Beta build. Startup apps not showing in Task Manager is a known issue in this build.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

I have experienced this as well with builds 22623.891, 22623.1020 and 22623.1028. So far no known fix for this known issue. I went back to build 22623.885. You may wanna try it out.

Just an FYI, if you use the Vivetool app you can go to the TaskManagerFilterEngine which is code 39420424 and disable it. That will turn off the Task Manger search bar that causes the start up apps display error. That will restore your Task manager start up apps if you want a workaround till they fix Task Manger. You'll loose the new search bar and you will have to disable it every Windows Update until they fix the problem.

PS, I'd recommend using the Vivetool GUI version. I know it doesn't always have the latest code updates as the command prompt version but it is so much easier, faster and more convenient to use.

Your welcome, I don't know what build your using but just so you know 22621.1095 and 22623.1095 beta builds have fixed the startup app display problem. You won't need to disable the search bar with Vivetool if your on that version now.

I was in the Beta program, but got out of it when the Startup issue started because at that time the official build didn't have the issue (yet). Glad it's fixed in beta so hopefully the official build will release soon.
