Time and Language Sync Clock Time with Internet Time Server in Windows 11

  • Staff
Time_banner.png

Time is a measure in which events can be ordered from the past through the present into the future, and also the measure of durations of events and the intervals between them.

Your PC's system clock is used to record the time whenever you create or modify files on your PC.

You can synchronize the Windows system clock with an Internet time server to match the time on the time server. This will help ensure the clock's time on your PC is accurate.

Your clock is typically automatically synced once a week and needs to be connected to the Internet for the synchronization to occur.

Reference:

This tutorial will show you how to manually synchronize the clock time with an Internet time server for all users in Windows 11.

You must be signed in as an administrator to synchronize the system clock time.

Contents

  • Option One: Sync Clock with Internet Time Server in Settings
  • Option Two: Sync Clock with Internet Time Server in Control Panel
  • Option Three: Sync Clock with Internet Time Server using Command

OPTION ONE

Change Time in Settings

If your PC is joined to a domain, you will not be able to use this option to sync the clock time.

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Time & language on the left side, and click/tap on Date & time on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Sync_time_in_Settings-1.png

3 Click/tap on the Sync now button under Additional settings on the right side. (see screenshot below)

You will see the last successful time synchronization and time server used under Sync now in Additional settings.

Sync_time_in_Settings-2.png

4 You will see a checkmark indicating the time has been successfully synced. (see screenshot below)

Sync_time_in_Settings-3.png

5 You can now close Settings if you like.

OPTION TWO

Sync Clock with Internet Time Server in Control Panel

If your PC is joined to a domain, you will not be able to use this option to sync the clock time.

1 Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Date and Time icon.

2 You can close the Control Panel if you like.

3 Click/tap on the Internet Time tab, and click/tap on the Change settings button. (see screenshot below)

Sync_time_in_Control_Panel-1.png

4 Click/tap on the Update now button. (see screenshot below)

It is required to have the Synchronize with an Internet time server box checked to Update now.

If you like, you can select or type the name of an Internet time server to use to sync with instead.

If an error occurred, click/tap on Update now again to see if it may successfully synchronize.

Sync_time_in_Control_Panel-2.png

5 Click/tap on OK when the clock has been successfully synced. (see screenshot below)

Sync_time_in_Control_Panel-3.png

6 Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

Sync_time_in_Control_Panel-4.png

OPTION THREE

Sync Clock with Internet Time Server using Command

1 Open Windows Terminal (Admin), and select Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt.

2 Copy and paste the command below you want to use into the elevated terminal, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

(Use if not joined to domain)
w32tm /resync

OR

(Use if joined to domain)
net time /domain

If you get a The service has not been started. (0x80070426) error, then it means that you need to start the Windows Time service using the net start w32time command, and try again.

If you get a The computer did not resync because no time data was available error, then you should be able to try again until successful.

3 You can close Windows Terminal if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

If I recall correctly, in one of your earlier posts you mentioned McAfee. Is that working as a firewall? Could it be blocking your time sync?

Using netsh command, after enabling the inbound and outbound traffic thro 123 port, the result is thus captured
M
C:\Windows\system32>netsh firewall show state

Firewall status:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Profile = Standard
Operational mode = Enable
Exception mode = Enable
Multicast/broadcast response mode = Enable
Notification mode = Enable
Group policy version = Windows Firewall
Remote admin mode = Disable

Ports currently open on all network interfaces:
Port Protocol Version Program
-------------------------------------------------------------------
123 UDP Any (null)

IMPORTANT: Command executed successfully.
However, "netsh firewall" is deprecated;
use "netsh advfirewall firewall" instead.
For more information on using "netsh advfirewall firewall" commands
instead of "netsh firewall", see KB article 947709
at Use netsh advfirewall firewall context - Windows Server .

C:\Windows\system32>
From the results it is seen that this port is not blocked by my ISP. Am I correct

Of course, this I enabled in one of the other pc and tried sync, it is failing with the same error.

what could be then preventing this sync.

The way I see it you are being blocked by your router or your ISP is blocking that port. See what others think.

You have to list the devices that form part of the pathway to the time server.
I see Windows 11, a firewall, the router, the ISP, the internet path to the time server, and the time servers.

1) Do I recall correctly that in another thread you indicate that you had a second machine failing similarly. If this is true then it would be unlikely for two machines to both say they cannot communicate and it would be a windows problem. That would require both machines to be identically stuffed.

2) If number 1 is true and both machines are failing similarly then you probably need to look elsewhere for your problem. You have tried multiple time servers and none work so they are unlikely to be the problem. You say the problem is not your firewall then that leaves a router and your ISP as the most likely problems.

Given that we know nothing about either then we can't help much with those.

This is obviously not a simple problem else it would be solved by now. I note that many people have offered advice but you have not followed that advice or not reported back on it. What happens then is that people lose interest and abandon the thread. Even worse is that one of those suggestions might be your solution. Several people have suggested the use of third party NTP clock setting programs. You haven't reported back on those suggestions. It would also be a good idea to post only in one thread because not every person sees both threads.

If you think the problem is related to your router then you might get more specialist help at Small Net Builder Forums. However, you might have to disclose the brand and model of your router / modem and who your ISP is.

Like I suggested before, ask a friend or neighbor who uses the same ISP. If they have no issues, the problem lies somewhere inside your residence (PC, router).

Hi, Bobd, I have followed all the advises given by forum members . One has suggested, time sync software. That does not fix because, I had to open and see the sync time success in the software. So, I had to open the program on every occasion to if the time sync took correctly.
Regarding your ideas to look in to router settings, I find some port forwarding settings that configured a single port 113. There is a provision to add ports but again, I do not know, which ip is to given in one field. When I put my router's page, I get error that this ip is your modem ip. Please input a valid Lan ip. So, there it stops and I am continuing to how to know the ip for the port.
I have already tried all the troubleshooting and still I am not getting my time sync correctly.
I will make trials and errors to achieve this .

Hi, Brink, I have re synced my time successfully after a lot of trials and fixes .
I will give the best source , where microsoft articles and knowledge bases and their workaround.
I also give the link of a blog, whose instructions have solved this vexed problem.
I do not know if we need to add any rules for this.
But , the private link really solved my problem.
the link is given below
here you find configuration of ntp server both domain and client or stand alone .
The first clue is
configure your ntp server with ntp server ip address rather than its name.
This makes changes immediately in the registry and it syncs successfully even though the error appears in internet time tab settings as error.
There is no error showing in settings time and date settings .
I value his article, where he mentions about ip address of ntp server.
I just went to google ntp servers and choosse the ip of time.google.com .
When ever I go to settings to check, it gives the time synced at the time of start.
The microsoft article link is given below
Thanks for all who provided suggestion and answers.
It took a lot of time to find a workable solutions.
Brink, If you find the solution to be useful, you could add in your 1st page of the tutorial.
A sub query: Is it risky to time sync with ntp server, because, I read in some article, that it is a source for ddos attack on router.
Second query: is it correct to configure ntp server thro its ip address, which I have used.
Expecting reply from brink and others

AFAIK you should be able to sync time using address and not IP address.

I always change (via control panel) the address of the time server. Previously I would just use id.pool.ntp.org (which ID = Indonesia), so you could just replace that with the country TLD, example would be au.pool.ntp.org for Australia NTP servers.

However, now I would use time.cloudflare.com. time.google.com is equally good too, I'd say better than time.windows.com

But I tried and got error messages as instructed in tutorial timed out error or peer is unreachable or windows did not resync because the time data was not available .
When I used the ip, it did not proper any error and correctly sync.
So, I have given the link from the blog .
I tried many times.
I mean not only IP but also the command in the link for stand alone computer.
May be other syntax words in the link could have fixed with ip address

Hi, all, now some days have gone and I have been outside. I checked today and the time is syncing correctly now.
I used this formula from the first link given above in my post 31,
w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"xx.xx.xx.xx,0x1" /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update
This formula have saved me from time sync error. . Instead of ntp server physical address, I used ip and the formula.
This is working without fail. The other things in the formula also helps to change some registry entries to correctly sync the time.
Hi, Brink, my friend, I want your comment on this .

Great news that manually specifying the time server works for you.

Hi, Brink, I am not applying the formula daily to sync. Once I did, and the time sync was successful for successive days.
It is great of you to remember me .
Could you give the technical details of the above command, so that I could understand the formula better.
