Is there an easier way to sync subtitles with different language films that you legally can download ?
At the moment you have fiddle about with sync settings within your particular chosen media player..is decrease subtitle by 5 secs or more or increase 5 secs or more and i have tried several attempts without success...
I use Potplayer as my main media player as i don't like VLC player ( reasons i don't like to go into ).
Is fiddling about with sync settings the only current method for syncing subtitles ?

For example i saw a Sophia Loren black and white movie which had English subtitles on YouTube...downloaded it and played movie but there was no subtitles.

The only way i could see English subtitles was to use a screen recording program ie Bandicam and then play the movie in Potplayer.

Any suggestions ?

Thank you.

Subsync

You can download it and run it locally (that's what I've done and it work great). You can also run the online version via a browser (I haven't tried that).

Thank you for reply LesFerch,

I have a second pc Dell Inspiron DT 3670 ( which i am using now ) near enough a clone of my main Asus pc.
Anyway, downloaded and installed latest version of VLC Player and downloaded SRT English file for Sophia Loren movie and downloaded full movie from Youtube and loaded this into VLC player and add subtitle and wow the SRT file is in sync with the Sophia Loren movie.
VLC player must have a better subtitle syncing method than Potplayer which is my main media player.

Issue solved.

The easiest way is to play the media in VLC and use G/H keys to sync the subtitle with the video.
But if you want to fix it for good and keep that media then you need to use a third party application like Subtitle Workshop.

I'm not aware of VLC having any subtitle sync capability. I think you just happened to download video and SRT files that were already in sync. Are the subtitles still out of sync it Potplayer?

Please note that the Subsync utility will handle a basic shift sync, as well as completely resyncing by "listening" to the audio.

Anyhow, good to hear you got it sorted.

Hi LesFerch,

I think you are right in that the Sophia Loren movie and SRT subtitle file may have already been in sync and will try another foreign movie and English SRT file and test with VLC Player and see whats happens.
Concerning Potplayer Sophia Loren movie and English SRT file are slightly out of sync ...no matter what settings i apply i can never get to play movie in sync with subtitle...either the subtitle shows up say 5 seconds before the performers in movie speak or 5 seconds after the performers speak and not a direct ' lock '.

Anyway, the Sophia Loren plays ok with English subtitles on Dell Pc ( i am using my main Asus pc now ).

Bye and have a nice evening.

Using the movie "What a Woman" from 1956, there are two similar copies on YouTube...

This one includes subtitles burned into the video: video

And this one that has no subtitles: video

Note that both of them have a 5 second "ad" at the start. That would explain why an SRT downloaded from here would be out of sync by 5 seconds. The SRT is synced to an untouched copy of the movie.

I tested the no-subtitles version of the video with the SRT file with both VLC and Potplayer on Windows 11. In both cases, the subtitles were 5 seconds too early, as expected.

Is there any chance that you played the version with built-in subtitles via VLC and played the other version with the SRT file via Potplayer?

Hi LesFerch,

To answer your question possibly played Sophia Loren in Vlc player but i downloaded English SRT file from the internet and installed in same directory with the same name as the Sophia Loren but .SRT and subtitles are in sync and subtitles play in sync with movie in Potplayer.

And i have noticed there are several English SRT files from various subtitle sites and i may have downloaded a out of sync file originally and re downloaded a correct synced SRT file just by chance.

Anyway i happy with the result ..

Bye have a nice evening.
