Taskbars get hidden when I maximise windows

Windows 11
I decided to install Win11 on my desktop ahead of Microsoft offering it to me by upgrading from Win 10. Now sometimes a few days after a reboot when I maximise some windows on my first or second iiyama monitors the window fills the whole screen instead of leaving the taskbar showing.
Dose anyone have any idea if there is anything I can do to prevent this.
Thanks,
Viv

BTW, although Skype is supposed to be able to zoom, it doesn't for me. Pretty much everything else will zoom in or out though.

Thanks, not something I was aware of. That just changes the magnification of the window without making the window fit the space above the taskbar.

What happens when you press the windows key? Should show the start screen and the task bar. Just a workaround for now maybe.

I've always been notorious for setting program properties to run as maximized. Here's what I did. Right click on your program, under "run" select normal window instead of maximized. Open your program and drag the edges to fill the screen or whatever size you want. When you close the program, Windows remembers the size. From then on, when you show your taskbar it will cover the bottom edge of window. You can still maximize normally. The key to it is what you have set in properties.

Thanks for the suggestion but Windows does remember the correct size for a day or two, then decides that maximised programs should occupy the whole of the screen, not just the area above the taskbar. I have resized programs as you suggested but that does not last. Maybe Microsoft will make some changes which will stop this problem in a future update.

This issue has been happening since XP. Try the F11 key a couple of times. Another thing to try is, before you open a window, right click the task bar, taskbar settings, taskbar behaviours and select 'automatically hide the taskbar'. Open a maximised window and move the cursor to the bottom. If the taskbar pops up then right click it again and turn off the 'automatically hide the taskbar'.
Another thing to know is if you double click on a blank space on the top bar(tab bar) of a maximised window it will go back down to a previously resised window allowing you to see the task bar. Double click again and it will go back to being maximised.

It looks as if pressing the F11 key a couple of times does the trick. I will try your other suggestions later. Many thanks.

On the screen that's maximized with no taskbar showing try moving the mouse cursor to the very top. Does the toolbar show up and can you use this this icon to minimize?

I had the same issue, but as far as I recall, Taskbar is part (somehow) of the Windows Explorer program. So works for me to restart Windows Explorer Process:
Open Windows explorer / Explorer (Win key + E)
Enter Task manager (CTR+Shift+Esc)
Search Windows Explorer process:
- Right click it and press Restart

Hope this solves your issue as it does mine.

The problem with this method is that restarting windows explorer can, and often will, also close other programs that depend on the windows explorer to continue running. For example, Autohotkey: Whenever I restart the explorer, it closes whichever ahk script my computer was running. So it is a solution, but not the best solution.

I didn't know about "pressing F11 a couple of times", and I was surprised that it works. I am confused why it not reliable though. Sometimes you have to press 2 times, sometimes 6, sometimes even more... Weird stuff, but I am glad that at least I can solve this issue now.

Also, someone said it is a problem since Windows XP. I use Windows since its 98 version, practically daily, and 11 was the first one that had this problem for me. ymmv

For me the problem was Nvidia GEForce Experience's "In-Game Overlay". What actually is happening is that when this is turned on, the taskbar is behind the window, and if it is maximized, well, it is behind it entirely. You can restore the window to unmaximized and move it so that that it covers the taskbar, the task bar should be on top, but it is behind the window. You turn off "In-Game Overlay" and viola, the taskbar is on top again. This was a real tricky one because we always blame Microsoft  In GEForce Experience, click Settings, you'll get this screen.1700096464751.png
