There have recently been interesting posts concerning Outlook. This one approaches the subject from a pictorial viewpoint.

It is my understanding that there are currently three (or more?) ways (Microsoft) Outlook can be accessed:

1713737856139.png an older, free, form of MS mail that is currently outdated (and therefore not “New” whatsoever), though it continues to show up.

Will someone, correct my descriptions if necessary, and explain the differences between these 'new' species, and when/where we might use or not use them in practice (since using some may get in the way of using others?).

Security is the biggest issue - the problem, however, has to do with older security breaches - I am still being haunted the the breach of the Office of Personal Management back in 1998! For my mom , it is worse - not better.

Some of the shortcut pics say new, possibly because you’ve never opened them.

In your order

  • If using “Mail” you’re using the old Windows 10 version

  • If using “Outlook” you’re using the first replacement for “Mail”

  • If using “Outlook (New)” you are using the version that Microsoft is trying to push us to use (“Outlook” has a toggle to try it) and will be replacing the previous two versions (Mail & Outlook)

  • The web version of Outlook, has been updated to reflect the changes and workings of the “Outlook (New)” version (I believe)

  • There is also “Classic Outlook”. However it is still seen as “Outlook” in the start menue. This is the Outlook that belongs to any “Microsoft Office Suites” e.x. Microsoft Office 2016 to Office 365.

Why would you want to?

Unless you’re using the “Classic Outlook” you’re going to be forced to use the “Outlook (New)” version anyway. In fact I believe they have now updated O365 to the new version of “Classic Outlook”
Even the “Classic Outlook” has a toggle to try the a new version.

Microsoft is trying to unify “Outlook” due to what it has admitted, was a mess.

The word 'new" written in blue just means it's a recently installed app. Of those you listed only the last one with 'new' written in black is the Outlook New App that is replacing the traditional Windows Mail app.
You should be using the second one that is Office 365 Classic Outlook.
Once you ever click on Outlook new, you are automatically switched to it in 365. You do not want that as it has limitations over the classic Outlook desktop app which has more options..Once switched, some people have not been able to switch back.

In short, if you’re wanting to use the Windows desktop version, you may as well use the Windows desktop “App” “Outlook (New)” because they’re forcibly changing us to it soon anyway.

Otherwise
Stick to O365 Outlook. And yes I got the second one wrong, I didn’t immediately notice the icon. As Glasskuter says, it’s the Office 365 version. By the way, Office 365 has been renamed to Microsoft 365

The 1st one is the Mail & Calendar App, still current, regularly updated, and available for around 10 years, started in Windows 8.

The 2nd one is Classic Outlook, paid for application been around for decades.

3rd one is the New Outlook (Beta), it is very beta lacking in features and compatibility with many Email accounts.

None is "new" as such, the 3rd one has been Beta for at least 6 months. Penned to replace both 1st and 2nd but way off that as yet.

You can use any number of Email clients at once, though this would be for testing purposes, which I did do, primary requirement was reliability.

In the case of Outlook, it's used to distinguish between the older version and the new one, the one set to replace Mail in Windows. They're doing the same thing for the new version of Teams. It's not merely that it's newly installed. If you install the old Teams on a fresh Windows, it doesn't say new on it.

If it says “New” in blue, I am almost 100% positive it’s because he hasn’t opened it yet.
The only new versions in there are the ones with New in brackets (New)

You can't use the desktop clients "interchangeably", because each app manages a private working copy of the mailbox. So switching back and forth will cause sync problems. There isn't one unified data store that all apps share.

OWA is a live look at your mailbox, as it's store on the server side.

Anyway...
If you're accustomed to Outlook for Office, keep using that, it's probably the most reliable.
If you're adventurous, try the (New) Outlook, it's actually getting way better than even a few short months ago!
The Mail app is limited and getting replaced by the (New) Outlook anyway.
Then there's always Outlook on the web, if you're not comfortable with any of the above.

No. It's something they're putting on new versions to distinguish from the old. Kind of like the Pre that is/was on the CoPilot icon (I don't have it, so I can't see it anymore).

I've been using the new Teams since November, every work day, and it still says New.View attachment 94084

@jro Just use the shortcut on your desktop.. It's the proper one. If you want it on your taskbar, right click on it and select pin to taskbar. Ignore the different outlooks in the all apps list. Pretend they're not there.
