Actually I think that's already been happening in the background judging from articles I've read in the past couple months. :eyeroll:

Anthropic, a leading AI company, announced that it would withhold its latest model, Mythos Preview, from the public, citing unprecedented vulnerability-discovery capabilities that could cause significant damage in the wrong hands.

The concern has reached the highest levels of government. In the wake of Anthropic’s announcement about Mythos Preview, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent convened a meeting with major financial institutions this week to discuss “the rapid developments taking place in AI,” an agency spokesperson said.

did they not think that the bad actors would find use of AI to their advantage
before any of the good actors even got to understand AI.

this can of worms is now open

It seems to me that the article is somewhat exagerated in its claims, the new model, most likely, won't give attackers unprecedented capabilities, probably improves them but nothing too fancy that they couldn't do before with the proper tooling (or even the previous AI model).
The article also makes many claims putting United States as the potential victim (which could be likely) but neglecting mentioning that they were also the attackers using such technology.

It also focuses on "cyberattacks", "warfare" and the like, but completely ignores the fact that AI is right now being used for even more nefarious things and as we speak it's already in wrong hands, but nobody intended to prevent such bad actors the usage of AI tools.

My wild guess: besides being a publicity stunt, I guess that Anthropic found a bug in some important Unted States' system and they're forcing withholding the update for the fix to become available, so that no one else also found it. It's too suspicious that the AI companies now have moral when there is significant damage already done and still out there and they didn't stoped for a single moment.
