Win 11 Pro 24H2
So my Windows 10 work computer finally upgraded to Windows 11 today, but I am a bit puzzled. It only upgraded to 22H2 rather than 23H2. I assume that I will be getting 23H2 in the coming days, but why would MS not just upgrade to 23H2?

Maybe I am missing a pre-requisite, but Windows Update says that I am up to date as of five minutes ago. I guess we shall see...

Nope. I do it. I don't trust the IT department not to mess up my machine.

Strangely enough, the next day WU offered me the 23H2 package. It went in without a hitch. I am all patched and ready to go!

The Feature Update from 21H2 to 22H2 is a full Feature Update that replaces all the system files with new ones. The Feature Update from 22H2 to 23H2 is a small enablement package that installs like a Cumulative Update and turns on the dormant features that are already in the system files of the latest build of 22H2.

To be offered the update to 23H2 you need to already be on 22H2. I think that Windows Update probably had to do it in two steps, for that reason.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

I completely think that you are right on this point. It seems to have been delivered in two steps.

I just found it strange that MS didn't bundle the two together by this point. 23H2 has been out for a while. I just thought it would go in in a single step.

Could be any reason for the 2 steps but the one that I think is in play involves the EU and some restrictions.
