I am having issues moving large files (5.13 Gig) from folder to folder or Drive to Drive. My primary drive is a Samsung SSD 2T, secondary is same but 1T, and two internal 4T WD Hard Drives. The last file in trouble just kind of locked up for about 7 minutes, blacked out the screen then back to where it was. Same issue if I just want to rename or cut/paste. Doesn't matter. The files are movies by the way like MKV and MP4.
Is there some sort of generic limit

None that I'm aware of, and certainly not at that size. I regularly move 30-40 gigabyte image files between drives with no issues. Is it any particular combination of source and destination disks? Are all the drives formatted NTFS?

All 4 drives are NTSF and only one (storage) is particularly full. I am not one to partition large drive but thought that might be an issue or maybe buffering. Not sure if there is a setting for that on Samsung Magician. Will have another look see. Annoying issue as wait time is long and then nothing gets done.. Trying to copy to the 1T SSD is same as to the older 1T HD.

This is a relatively new build, but same was apparent on prior build. Been looking at this for a while now.

I'd be looking for a pattern, is it one drive, all drives, both directions from source and target?

I'm doubling down on what @antspants suggested: I had that problem recently with a large (6gb) file. Shutting off the A/V for long enough to do the copy let it work properly.

I agree that I have found an array of speeds depending on a file type. I have never found rhyme nor reason as to why.
Could be that AntiVirus reads files differently
Could be that Windows reads files differently
Could be a very easy explanation but to be quite honest, I’ve never looked into it?

For what it’s worth:

- Why is it faster to transfer mp4 files than mkv files?

MP4 files are generally transferred faster than MKV files due to their smaller file sizes and efficient compression methods. While both formats can utilize the same video codecs, MP4 often employs codecs like H.264 which are specifically optimized for streaming and result in lower file sizes without compromising quality. MKV files, on the other hand, can have larger file sizes even when using the same codecs, making them slower to transfer.

  • File Size:
    .

MP4 files are typically smaller than MKV files, even when using the same codecs. This is because MP4 containers and codecs are more optimized for efficient compression, especially for streaming.

  • Codecs:
    .

While both formats can use the same video codecs, MP4 is more commonly used with codecs like H.264, which are known for their efficient compression and lower bandwidth requirements, leading to smaller file sizes. MKV can also use H.264 or HEVC,but HEVC may not be as widely supported by streaming platforms and devices, potentially leading to larger files or compatibility issues.

- Why is it faster to transfer some file types as opposed to others in Windows 11

In Windows 11, transferring a few large files is generally faster than transferring many small files due to overhead associated with each file transfer. The system needs to negotiate and manage the transfer for each file, which adds time, especially for small files. Additionally, the type of file system (like NTFS vs. FAT32) and the speed of the storage devices and USB ports can also influence transfer speeds.

  • File Count and Overhead:
    .

Transferring many small files increases the overhead because the system has to handle a separate transfer for each one. This can add up, especially when comparing it to a single large file where the transfer negotiation only needs to happen once.

  • File System:
    .

The file system (e.g., NTFS, FAT32) on the drive affects transfer speeds. NTFS is generally faster than FAT32.

  • Storage Device Speed:
    .

The speed of your hard drive, SSD, or other storage device also impacts transfer speeds.

  • USB Port:
    .

The speed of the USB port (USB 3.0/3.1 are faster) can also affect transfer rates if you're using external storage.

  • Network Transfer:
    .

When transferring over a network, factors like network latency, bandwidth, and network congestion can also affect transfer speeds.

  • Compression:
    .

Compressing files before transferring can reduce the overall file size, making them transfer faster.
In summary, the number of files, the type of file system, the storage device speed, and other factors like compression, can significantly influence how quickly files transfer in Windows 11

When I rename a 70 GB (seventy Gigabyte) MKV file on the slowest storage device I could find, a 1TB WD Elements USB 2.0 HDD, it still only takes a fraction of a second to finish. To make it stuck for 7 minutes and black out the screen. I either have to hit the computer with a hammer or cover it with gas and set it on fire. Do yourself a big favor. Check the disks for errors before jumping to all sorts of :cough: (...) :cough: (...) conclusions.

As you know the files are safe, have you tried disabling any AntiVirus software you may have, just to see if it makes a difference?
Typically AV software doesn't care about file copying, unless the source is a removable USB drive or network share. That's because the file was already on an existing filesystem before you copied/moved it. Explorer is a trusted process, so it wouldn't normally be monitored in real-time.

Thinking out of the box here....how are your drives specifically connected on the motherboard? i.e. which M.2 slot(s) which Sata ports

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
All 4 drives in question are internal, so on the bus. I do have a 5th drive on usb3 port so will test with it unplugged and with anti virus off. Busy today but can have a go tonight. Thanks. I wish I understood more about this stuff!!

Building a new desktop on the horizon; this was definitely a budget build based on circumstances at the time.

What does "on the bus" actually mean? Are they NVMe M.2 drives or SATA drives? Are they SSD or rotating drives?

You should check if the 4 TB drives are manufactured as SMR drives or not. SMR drives tend to have poor write performance and limited cache sizes. Once they reach their cache limit, file copies take a long time on the disk level.

Sorry; 2 Sata SSD (A 1 T and a 2T) and two Sata (rotating drives 4T) will look to see about the SMR thoughts. Back to work in an hour.
