Win11 requires VirtualBox, 7.[0.20-xxxx But I cannot install that.

What now? So far I'd give Microsoft a D for this.

Something is seriously messed up here. The install window title references VB 7.0.20, but the error is referencing VB 6.1.22. Did you try to install 6.1.22 recently?

Nope. I am confused as well.

There's just no excuse for Microsoft to release such an easily screwed up install program.

The issue with VirtualBox is that Windows 11 install app seems to require it. Not sure why.

VB 6.1.22 is apparently installed on my computer, but I can't find it. Perhaps unknowingly I deleted it? Don't know. I can't uninstall it as the system can't find the MSI.

Did you try to use Revo Uninstaller (Free version) to uninstall the VirtualBox program?
Revo does things the normal Windows uninstaller can't.
I always use the free, portable version, which does not need any installation on the system!

I'm trying to update my computer from Win10 to Win11 but it's stuck on this *X($#(( VirtualBox app which I never use. Apparently there is, somehow, the VB 6.1.22 version on my computer, or at least entries somewhere that make it seem so, but it's no where on my computer. And for reasons, I have to have VBox 7.xxxx on the computer but VBox 7.xxx won't install because there is VBox 6 somewhere. But there isn't. What I see is a message, "The older version of Oracle VM VirtualBox 7.0.20 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group."

OK, gotcha. All I can suggest is to go through the Registry, then search for any possible VB files on your C: drive. Are you certain that VB 6 was never installed, or that a failed install attempt was never cleaned up?

I've done the Registry search. As I never consciously used VB I'm not sure what installed it. There are some VB6 files but in the C:\program files\Oracle\VirtualBox but no files the VB7 is looking for. The install wants the MSI.

So you're saying VMware woks better on Windows 11? Has that been your experience?

Sorry for the questions. Just curious because this is something I may be considering to install at a future date.

I should of asked this earlier, but here goes: is this Windows 10 system in a VM, by chance? If not, your OP references files that Oracle is looking for in your %USERPROFILE% - are there any files/directories here?

Also, why doesn't Windows Update offer you the option to upgrade? That should have worked right away.

I also asked on Microsoft and got this reply:

Virtualbox is used by some other apps too.

https://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2021/03/uninst...

The setup error is quite vague and doesn’t provide much help in identifying the issue. VirtualBox is virtualization software that allows running an operating system on top of Windows, like Android or a Windows installation. Even if you don’t have VirtualBox installed, it may still be used by other applications running in the background on your computer. Removing the software should eliminate the error. Additionally, if the software developer has updated their software to use the new version of VirtualBox, you should no longer see the error message.

To fix the Virtualbox blocking Windows 10 update to a new version, please go through the steps below.

Right-click the Start button and Choose Apps and features.

In the list of apps, locate the app(s) which may be using virtualization. Examples Include Bluestacks, LD Player, Android Studio, etc. If you have Virtualbox software itself, remove that as it may have older traces. For example, Virtualbox is used by LD Player and is located in the path C:\Program Files\dnplayerext2, and
C:\Program Files\ldplayerbox.

You need to manually delete both of these folders. In addition, they may be hidden so show the files beforehand.

Restart your computer and try again.

Hope that helps, and rely on us for any further inquiries. All the best.

You could try Vmware Workstation -- it's now Free -- or Hyper-V (if Win 11 Pro or above -- enable in turn windows features on / off in control panel).

Have you read OPs original post? They are not talking about using vms.

In fact, we have no idea what they are going on about really.

Windows 11 does not require VirtualBox or the other way around. If one or other program needs this, the issue is there with that program.

Maybe provide more details how / where this issue started.
Seems to be by installing VirtualBox 7.0.20.

Also the (original?) installer of v7.0.20 requesting files of v6.1.22 seems totally misplaced here. Never encountered this ever before.
May be a corrupt installer or there is an older version in place.

You may need to get the latest installer from the original VirtualBox website and try to install that manually.
But if you don't need VirtualBox or never requested the installation yourself, stop there and check who / what needs this to be installed.
