System Turn On or Off AutoEndTasks at Sign out, Restart, Shut down in Windows 11

  • Thread starter Thread starter Brink

Task_Manager_banner.webp

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off AutoEndTasks for your account in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

The HungAppTimeout value is the default 5 seconds you wait on the Signing out, Restarting, or Shutting down screen when you sign out, restart, or shut down to see if any still open apps (tasks) will end (close) before considered "hung" or "not responding".

When the HungAppTimeout expires with unresponsive app(s) found, the End Task dialog appears asking you to click/tap on Sign out anyway, Restart anyway, Shut down anyway to force close the app(s) and lose anything unsaved, or click/tap on Cancel to cancel the sign out, restart, or shut down and return to the desktop to properly save and close the app(s).

If you do not make a choice in the End Task dialog before the 1 minute timeout expires, Windows will automatically cancel the sign out, restart, or shut down by default, and return you to the desktop.

If you turn on AutoEndTasks, Windows will automatically force close any apps instead of waiting for your choice on the End Task dialog screen, and automatically Sign out anyway, Restart anyway, or Shut down anyway.

EXAMPLE: End Task dialog when signing out, restarting, or shutting down

This example uses Notepad open with unsaved changes when trying to sign out, restart, or shut down.

Here's How:

1 Do step 2 (on) or step 3 (off) below for what you would like to do.

2 Turn On AutoEndTasks

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Turn_On_AutoEndTasks_at_sign-out_restart_shut-down.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"AutoEndTasks"="1"

3 Turn Off AutoEndTasks

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Turn_Off_AutoEndTasks_at_sign-out_restart_shut-down.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"AutoEndTasks"=-

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 Sign out and sign in or restart the computer to apply.

8 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Well, the End Task dialog could be helpful to some to prevent them from mistakenly loosing everything in an open unsaved app when trying to sign out, restart, or shut down.

While for others, it can be nuisance and don't want to see it.

Choices are always great. :-)

Hiyya Shawn am a little confused as to which one to use I usually (because I read it once ) to hold down the left shift key while shutting down is the way to do a complete shutdown.

Hello John, :-)

Shift + Shut down in the Start menu > Power menu is to do a full shut down (complete) instead of a hybrid shut down.

That isn't related to AutoEndTasks which is to automatically kill any hung task(s) if there should be any at shut down or restart instead.

Is there a way to delay the AutoEndTasks command? It works great! However, I'd like to see about a 10-15 second delay so the user still has the option to click "sing out anyway" or "cancel". If they don't, THEN it will force the signout. I'm guessing it doesn't exist because I've browsed around on this site (and tenforums), and I see mentions to this command, but no one talks about a delay.

Hello, :alien:

Not that I'm aware of. AutoEndTasks is only for disabling the End Task dialog.

Hello, is it completely safe to turn on the auto end task? Will it cost any problem later on?

Hello, :alien:

It's safe.

If you turn on AutoEndTasks, Windows will automatically force close any apps instead of waiting for your choice on the End Task dialog screen, and automatically Sign out anyway, Restart anyway, or Shut down anyway.

If off, you just have to manually click/tap on the Sign out anyway, Restart anyway, or Shut down anyway button if an app hangs.

If off, I notice even if you don't click Sign out anyway, Restart anyway, or Shut down anyway button. It will still proceed on its own if you wait like 5 seconds or so..is that normal?

That's normal if the hung app was able to close.

That would indeed be a normal prompt to approve merging the reg file.

You would get a failure to merge error message if it wasn't successful.

After turning on the AutoEndTasks, i still notice that the message still pop up sometime after i shutdown my notebook. Whats went wrong actually? Is there anyway to check or further ensure i did the right thing?

You can still see the hung app message, but it should automatically force close the hung app so it can continue the shutdown.
