Starting with Windows 11 build 22621.1928, you can now choose to display seconds in the system tray clock.

This also includes showing seconds on any added additional clocks.

Contents

  • Option One: Turn On or Off Show Seconds in System Tray Clock in Settings
  • Option Two: Turn On or Off Show Seconds in System Tray Clock using REG file
  • Option Three: Turn On or Off Show Seconds in System Tray Clock in Registry Editor

5 You can now close Settings if you like.

Option Two

Turn On or Off Show Seconds in System Tray Clock using REG file

This option will not work when Administrator protection is turned on.

1 Do step 2 (on) or step 3 (off) below for what you would like to do.

2 Turn On Show Seconds in System Tray Clock

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Turn_ON_show_seconds_in_system_tray_clock.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"ShowSecondsInSystemClock"=dword:00000001

3 Turn Off Show Seconds in System Tray Clock

This is the default setting

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

Turn_OFF_show_seconds_in_system_tray_clock.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"ShowSecondsInSystemClock"=dword:00000000

4 Save the REG file to your desktop.

5 If you have Smart App Control turned on, you will need to unblock the downloaded REG file.

6 Double click/tap on the downloaded REG file to merge it.

7 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

8 You can now delete the downloaded REG file if you like.

Option Three

Turn On or Off Show Seconds in System Tray Clock in Registry Editor

1 Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

2 Navigate to the key location below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below step 3)

HKEY_USERS\<SID>\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Substitute <SID> in the key path above with the actual SID for the account you want to apply this to.

For example:
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2498639629-3946114050-4100787084-1001\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

3 In the right pane of the Advanced key, double click/tap on the ShowSecondsInSystemClock DWORD to modify it. (see screenshot below)

ShowSecondsInSystemClock-1.webp

4 Enter 0 (off) or 1 (on - default) for what you want, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

ShowSecondsInSystemClock-2.webp

5 You can now close Registry Editor if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

I can confirm that the old .reg file restores the display of the clock with seconds in the latest Dev Build.
The option panel might not reflect it, but the clock does.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

One minor point - I cannot see any :ss in short time.
I didn't see it at first, either...,
but, I entered it anyway, however, it seems it doesn't make any difference since the modified Short Time becomes the Long Time, as there is no Long Time on the Calendar anyway!

Does that make any sense!?

Windows 11 22H2 ?
21H2. How do I get 22H2? I assume 22 is newer. I am all up to date on updates as of now according to Settings.

Edit: I just waited in the settings menu for like 10min and it actually just popped up...what the?? Guess I'm getting it, will update later when it's done :)

Windows 11 22H2 ?
no dice. still doesn't work even after updating to 22H2.
my process:

- go here and download vivetool:

- extract files to a new folder called "vivetool" in C:.

- open cmd as admin and type "c:\vivetool\vivetool.exe /enable /id:41314201" then hit "enter" and see that it reads:
"ViVeTool v0.3.2 - Windows feature configuration tool
Successfully set feature configuration(s)
C:\Windows\System32>"

- edit short time in control panel time settings to be "h:mm:ss tt" if it isn't already

- try adding "ShowSecondsInSystemClock" as a D-word with value 1 to "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" in RegEdit

- restart

- cry

Hello @thetimmyboy, :-)

I'm afraid this feature is only available starting with Windows 11 build 25247 for some. It hasn't fully rolled out to everyone yet.

Oh I see, so I can look forward to this being a native feature soon?

The registry hack works on Windows 10 (I'm using it).
