Two folders on desktop named differently seem to be unwantedly mirrored.

I have one directory named NIS and another named NIStemp. When I modify a file in the first folder, the file is automatically written into the 2nd folder. How do I turn that off? I want each folder to be unique with no linking, if that's what's happening.

Right-click on the desktop and either click "Open in Windows Terminal" or "Show more options" than "Open in Windows Terminal".

Once that is open on the desktop, type "dir" and see if either of the two folders is listed as some form of a link.

I know this isn't my desktop, but wanted to show you how the links work that I'm talking about:

If one is a link and the other is not, you can freely delete the Symlink folder and create a new folder with the name required so they become independent.

I think the answer is the fact that one of them is a tmp folder the other the main folder. It is possible that NIStmp will delete it's contents when they are not needed during a clean up

Well, how about that - that's a pretty cool trick I knew nothing about :-).

You can make those links, by doing the following:

use Terminal to find the folder you want to house the new link and type:
mklink /D FolderName C:\RealFolderLocation

So, for example, in the screenshot above, I used:
mklink /D Dropbox C:\Users\AJ\Dropbox

You can use /D for Directory or /J for a Junction, they work almost the same, but it's harder to change the icon on a Junction for some reason.

I don't think you want to change them as things may not work, they are there for a reason!

Sorry, the explanation was for @hsehestedt not the topic starter, I should have specified. I agree, if an app created those folders, best to leave them alone and let them do what they are doing.

NIS is just a folder name full of Open Office documents. Thanks for all your replies---I'm still trying to absorb the info. I see no links using the terminal mode when looking at the directories. Maybe this is an Open Office auto backup thing. Except Open Office was not
running when a folder in one directory duplicated itself in another directory.

Yeah, I'm familiar with how to create them (I use a few on my system in fact), I just didn't know about the Terminal trick.
