We can hope the House approves it now. That would be great not having to change the clocks twice a year.

The main reason that it was brought back in the UK, after testing from 1968 was the additional risk to school children, traveling back and fore to school in the dark. This was in the 1970's and there are more risks about today than then.

I would rather keep the small hassle of setting the clocks twice a year than have any child hurt

Hallelujah... I hope it passes.
I think the parents can drop off or pick up the kids...in what ever time frame gets chosen.

We could also just tilt the Earth more towards vertical. It's only 23.5 degrees off true vertical. :)

Putin's already thinking about doing that !!

However since many more people are out and about later in the day than early in the morning it's fairly obvious that much less energy is consumed in places where seasonal lengths in daylight changes matters -- i.e most of Europe, parts of the US etc. Where daylight length doesn't change much e,g in large parts of Africa or where it changes hugely e.g Iceland then seasonal clock adjustment is pointless.

As far as "Early morning" school for kids being more dangerous in the dark one could always adjust the school hours -- my last experience of visiting the UK is that hardly any kids walk to school anyway -- I'm sure probably much the same in most of Europe while USA has those hideous yellow "Prison type vehicles" to take kids to school -- hopefully not fitted out like those "Dept of Corrections" buses one sees in the movies.

UK kids appear to mostly be driven to school in large 4x4's which most of the parents can't drive or park so they slow down the work traffic every morning

I depends on where you live, I live on the outer edges of an estate, as I am near to several schools used by estate families and I see swarms of children passing my windows every school day Both in the morning and evening - A lot of these are secondary school kids, but there are also a high number of primary school age - Often being escorted by older siblings but some quite young, just appearing to be swept along by the flow, with little supervision

I am in a rural village 7 miles South of Salisbury with just one road up through the middle of it

Maybe that was just a Southern thing.

I always walked to school, it was a decent walk and the school was made up of 3 separate units depending on what age you were. You started school when you were 5 and left at 15 and I was at the same school the whole time. The only time it would have altered would have been if I'd passed the 11+ and gone on to Grammar School, which I didn't. I got free school meals and when we were in the infants you got a small bottle of milk mid-morning.

Good memories Joan, I came along a little later and although the 11+ exams were no longer applicable, we took the exams to segregate us into the ability bands in the single school, although mine was spread over two sites. we were the first year in the particular school setup and were always the oldest "Year". Of course this was the seventies and so the secondary site [for 3rd 4th 5th and 6th Forms) was not quite ready when we were ... So I spent almost a year with the rest of my year crammed into the top floor of a local primary school, being terrorised by gangs of five and Six year olds

All of my clocks auto-change by themselves. I don't have to worry about it. I don't wear a watch or anything. Upgraded my bedroom alarm clock to an Atomic Alarm Clock, so it auto-changes. . .lol

Except you glow in the dark now...

My school put us in sets, I was always in the A group, but whereas yours was the seventies mine was the fifties, I left school in 1958. I did have the chance of being able to stay on for an extra year, in the year I left we were doing shorthand and typing and we could stay on an extra year to carry on with it. I wanted to but my parents wouldn't let me I had to leave and start work to bring a wage into the house.

Simple solutions re. Children walking in dark

1) Reduce school hours by 1 hr in Winter, cut lunch hr to 30 mins.

& Increase School hours by 30 mins in Summer to make up, net decrease 30 mins.


2) Just adjust school hours by 1 hour all year round.

Of course, somebody will always whinge about any changes.
