OS
Windows 11 23H2
Laptop using WiFi on workgroup network, is able to connect to 2 other PCs on the network, but these two cannot connect to it even though network sharing is enabled. Folders are also shared. The laptop can be pinged.

Tried various solutions, including disabling and re-enabling everything to do with sharing.

Even when connected to the router by ethernet the problem still exists, so it does seem like this laptop under Windows 11 (Pro) with the problem.

Am at a loss now so any suggestions most gratefully received.

If you are using your dongle still, make sure the other devices know it new name as the dongle will be different to the onboard WIFI one

The other 2 computers will need to search on the network for the dongle then connect to it

The laptop appears in the network list of the other PCs, but when clicking to access it unfortunately that is where the problem lies.
The laptop is primarily used by my wife and she has recently changed the name of it, it was jilllaptop and is now just jill, could that be a problem?

I have found a workaround.

Using the 'Run' box, type in the IP address of the computer (e.g. \\192.168.1.**) and click OK, then a window opens with all the shared foldrers.

Until I find the solution to the original problem, I can use this workaround.

Try editing the Hosts file which is located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. You can edit it in Notepad.
Copy and paste the following line -

Code:
     192.168.1.** jill

substituting the actual numbers for ** and ensuring the name 'jill' is correct before saving.

Let us know how it goes.

EDIT make these changes on the systems that cannot access the laptop, not on the laptop

I would still like to understand why the normal Windows 11 file sharing will not work.

You said earlier that the laptop can be pinged - by name?

Have you tried rebooting your router? If it's simply left on continuously this might be all that is needed. Obviously you would need to remove the edit to the hosts file before testing any other scenarios.

Are you using fixed IPs or is it that your router, like mine. always allocates the same IP on each boot?

Rebooting the router was my first hope, unfortunately it did not work.
It allocates the same IP, but since I had this problem and with your solution I have assigned that laptop a static IP address.

I honestly don't know the answer but whenever I have had minor networking issues in the past I have usually been able to fix them running Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. It needs to run in safe mode and it's only necessary to run the networking repairs.

It's probably nothing wrong with your settings. I battled the exact same issue when all my computers were Windows 10. I had one out of three that was never recognized in the network map. I spent many hours on it but never could get it to show up. Like you, I ended up making a shortcut on the other two to it's ip address and then pinned the shortcut to quick access. It's still that way today because I never did come up with an answer to "why". I went so far as to restore an image of it onto an old junk PC which WOULD show in the network map. The only thing I could surmise was it may have something to do with it's network adapter which makes no sense to me.
If you're like me, even though there's a work around, we still want to know why it doesn't work as expected.

FYI I saw another thread where a user could restart "Function Discovery Resource Publication" in Services to get a computer to show on his network, which would work temporarily but eventually his problem would return. See if doing that makes yours appear.
