UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION/0xc000021a BSOD while gaming: no dump file

pc freezes + bsods when playing games. specifically overwatch 2 and destiny 2. can't replicate crashes with OCCT.

BSODs specifically with UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION or 0xc000021a

i was previously experiencing CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED while playing these games, but after clean installing windows + new PSU + new boot drive that issue went away. now these BSODs have started appearing.

there is always this progression of events before a bsod (storport -> bitlocker -> volmgr)


no dump files are created (thats the volmgr 161 above), not sure why (yes, the setting is enabled, page file is system managed, etc)

For dumps to be produced, The following should be correct




Page file must be on the same drive as your operating system


Page file base allocation size must be greater than installed physical RAM


Windows Error Reporting (WER) system service should be set to MANUAL


Set page file to system managed on the OS drive


Set system crash/recovery options to "kernel memory dump"


User account control must be running.


Sometimes SSD drives with older firmware do not create DMPS (update firmware)


Cleaner applications like Ccleaner delete DMP files so dont run them until you are fixed.




Bad Physical RAM may prevent the data from being saved and written to a file on reboot. If you suspect bad RAM run Memtest from this wiki




Full memory dumps can also be deleted (in win 7) if your HD space is under 25 gigs, but if you configured your system as the above suggests, you should not be generating full dumps.

all of the above is already set
already ran memtest, four passes with no mistakes

new information: no bsods happen if i switch video output to my igpu

How come the computer is using KMS activation?

my school provides activation to students

Do all students get free activation of any software or just specific software?

anyways its a motherboard issue (not surprising given recent asus news), i rma'd it, case closed

Glad to read that you identified the malfunctioning hardware.

How were you able to test it and RMA.

had my old am4 stuff still lying around so i replaced mobo + cpu + ram,
know its not ram due to memtest passes, cpu problems are rare, so best guess is mobo

also, i am getting CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED again using my old am4 stuff. i feel like these errors are related (since the replication condition is the same: gaming, and similar symptoms: bsod but not dump file) but im not sure where to verify that
i'll unresolve this thread, since it seems like this issue will continue to occur even with the replacement motherboard
