Devices Uninstall Driver in Windows 11

Device_Manager_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to uninstall a driver for a device in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

When a device is connected to your PC, Windows will usually automatically install drivers for it, or you may have to manually install the device's driver software.

Sometimes it might be necessary to uninstall a driver if it is causing issues, or you no longer need the driver after removing the device it's for.

You must be signed in as an administrator to uninstall a driver.

Hello, :-)

Using the DDU in that case would be best since it's specific for that driver. I just used NVIDIA as an example in the tutorial.

Hi Shawn,
What about windows automatically reinstalling unwanted devices? I have that problem and many others on W10 forums complain about the same thing. Not sure if this reinstalling is happening offline or online (in my case the unwanted device is "Microsoft Streaming Service proxy" supposedly an audio relic from Office 365 without proper drivers) that I uninstall and is immediately reinstalled by windows. I tried to block it in “Device Installation Settings” (see attached) without any results. I also attached the installation Events.
Thanks
Frank

Hello Frank, :-)

Hopefully, any driver installed by Windows Update wouldn't be considered incompatible.

Trying to prevent Windows Update from installing something is getting almost impossible these days with anything you do usually getting reset at some point.

You could try this below.

Hello Frank, :-)

You could try this below.

Hello Shawn,
When learning more about this "ksfilter.inf" (MS Streaming Service Proxy device) it looks like this is a "left over" from my old W10 OS when I migrated to W11, I wonder if I move this ksfilter.inf (with a .bak or .old extension) to a dummy folder would that not stop windows from installing that device or will it cause a BSOD because it is a Kernel driver? Related sys files to this device are:
MSKSSRV.sys
KSThunk.sys
But I cannot find a service to disable these from starting.
I keep that MS streaming device disabled for the time being and everything runs smoothly, booting is a bit slow with a Black screen for 3 sec.
I believe that the whole issue is caused by the brand new Intel Display driver that I installed, may roll back to the 2019 Acer VGA driver but that one caused Event error 4101 after Core Isolation was activated. I have no errors or issues with the new Intel display driver except for that pesky MS streaming services proxy device that pops up after I uninstalled it (there is no option to delete the driver in Device Manager).
I ran your .reg file and used: Hardware ID: "SW\\{96E080C7-143C-11D1-B40F-00A0C9223196}" for 1:
Windows loaded it now as an Unknown Device (policy not allowed?) and I uninstalled it again, will see if it comes back...
It came back as Unknown Device so I will reverse the reg file and uninstall the Unknown Device.

Maybe I am getting a break here: No new device was installed so far, maybe your reg. edit broke the auto install loop;-)
Frank

Still going strong Shawn, no surprises, still no new devices (automatically) installed, keeping my fingers crossed:unsure:
The new Intel display driver is working great, no event errors, nice bright screens, great internet sound&video. Booting is a bit slower (10 sec.)
Not sure what made it work, that scipt of yours that I reversed with the 2nd Download or by a windows patch after my feedback to MS (silent background fix?).

Fast Startup boot time is still the same at 30 sec., only Restart is a bit longer. See what the next patch Tuesday will bring us, hopefully no surprises.

Update 14 Sept. 2022
Received two Windows updates today (CU KB5017328 and CU .Net KB5017497), installed fine, no issues, no errors and no UNKNOWN DEVICE installed, so my problem is solved! I think the device issue I had with installing the new Intel display driver has something to do with only OEM drivers allowed with ACER's MOBO. There was also an obscure ACER driver installer running in the background that I uninstalled as it interfered with the INTEL Display driver installer. All is good now.:D

Update 25 Sept 2022
Finally sorted out that "MS Streaming Service Proxy device" issue I had: It is an older W10 driver/service that works with my RT/Intel audio card but is not supported by Intel's 2022 gpu/audio driver set (and also not detected by W11) so If you install the latest Intel 2022 display driver the MS Strmg. Srv Proxy dev. won't install properly (no drivers) but if you roll back to the 2019 Intel display driver version it installs OK. Intel provides an iigd_ext.inf driver (2019) to make their 2022 gpu and sound drivers to work with older MOBOs like mine (auto installs if you delete the ext. driver). I had that Intel 2019 extension driver already working with my 2019 Intel display drivers but never noticed the MS Strmg Serv Prox. dev till two weeks ago! Bottom line: I "updated" the MS Strmg Serv. Proxy in Device Manager by pointing to the old Intel 2019 display/audio driver bundle folder still on my laptop and it found those missing drivers, everything is OK now. Not sure what MS Streaming Service Proxy does, possibly have to connect an external DVD/CD player to find that out. So I am having a hybrid sound system (Realtek/Intel) partly still with 2019 and new Intel 2022 audio drivers (audio volume improved both with Media Player and watching video/sound online with Edge).

Soon I will be doing a clean install of Win 11. Based upon my last experience, long ago, none of my specific OEM drivers will be installed. Thus, the drivers in Device Manager might be generic drivers installed by Windows during the clean install.

I have my OEM drivers backed up on a USB stick. In order to be certain that my OEM drivers replace Windows' generic drivers, can I simply delete a driver, then point Device Manager to my backup folder without crashing any part of my laptop during the process of deleting and replacing?

I know updating the driver is an option, but will my OEM drivers know to overwrite Windows' generic drivers?

I'm sorry for my ignorance, and thank you bunches for your kind help.

I purchased this CTO laptop directly from HP in December 2021. However, I didn't unbox it and set it up until August 2023. Thus, in spite of its older specs now, it is a new laptop to me... along with all of Windows 11's learning curves and problems.

Hello, :alien:

You may be able to use this below as a better way for what you want.

I used that tut to back up my drivers. It was extremely helpful!

I'm sorry but I'm still clueless. How do I make certain Windows' generic and/or installed drivers are replaced by my OEM drivers?

In a recent test case, I tried to update a driver installed by Windows using my OEM driver, but because Windows determined the driver it had installed was newer than my OEM driver, my OEM driver didn't install.

Are there any drivers in Device Manager that can't be deleted (then immediately restored from a backup) because they will cause a system crash before the restore is finished? Windows has changed lots and lots and I'm trying to understand exactly how things work now.

Thanks for your help!

They should get replaced when you restore your backup.
