Hi all, I need some help from members skilled on old laptops ( an Asus K53SV, here is the link: K53SV - Support but not helpful for my problem) this is my wife's old laptop which at the moment has 2X4 GB RAM installed and I want to upgrade the amount of RAM to 16 GB, I did a cmd to find the max amount of RAM supported
Screenshot 2025-05-27 190320.webp
I opened the laptop and i see there are two RAM slots
Then I ordered this kit: https://www.amazon.it/dp/B08J3NGCMH?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title
Later just for curiosity I run CPUZ and a different CMD query, and they both detect the laptop has 4 slots and each support 4 GB, see images below,
Screenshot 2025-05-27 185214.webp

At this point I am really confused, will the sticks I bought be seen as 2X4 GB each in th BIOS?
Any advise or help is very welcome.

@Gas

Crucial has a RAM and SSD upgrade finder tool. It works well. :-)

Most laptops are only going to have 2 slots. Also if they sell a kit that goes higher than what the manufacturer states, that will typically work fine. I've gone well over the manufacture limits and have it recognized and usable by the OS.

Great this is what I am hoping. What is really confusing is the fact that CPUZ detects 4 slots.

I'm "guessing" this will work in your laptop...

Get two of these...

This is the RAM you have now. You can compare specs..

I'm unfamiliar with Samsung model numbers. Your RAM is CH0 and the 8GB stick(s) are BHO

Both are unbuffered and non-ECC 204 pin SODIMMS.

I "guess" pretty good, but ofc, there are no guarantees.

You might try calling ASUS and or Samsung and asking them. ^^
ASUS will know what the laptop supports, and Samsung will know what stick(s) to use.

It is very old yes, almost 15 years old, updated with W11 (unsupported of course) it's still performing very well I even use it with Photoshop sometimes, It's a Sandy bridge I7-2600 series. We use it when we are not at home.

You can also try Kingston Memory Finder. You don't have to buy Kingston, you can just see the appropriate RAM type compatible with the specific model and then buy another brand with the same specs. However, from my own experience, Kingston is very good brand with a high level of compatibility.

Some CPUs only support 1333MHz, others support both 1333MHz and 1600MHz. That was the case with my Intel Core-i3 CPU. Originally I had bought a 2nd generation Intel Core-i3 but then I saw at the specs that it didn't support 1600MHz, so the RAM I had bought with was seen as 1333MHz. I returned the CPU to the shop, thankfully I hadn't opened the box (I bought parts to build the computer myself) and I replaced with the 3rd generation Intel Core-i3 3200 which did support 1600MHz. So be extra careful before you buy. Post your exact laptop part number (aka Service Tag) and your CPU model to help you choose.

Multiple sites report a max memory capacity of 8GB for Asus K53SV. But this search needs more refinement, via exact model serial tag/number.
However, if the system reports 4 slots and max capacity of 16GB, you need to check besides under the back of the laptop also under the keyboard.
Usually two slots under the keyboard and two slots under the back. Two on each side of the motherboard.
These SandyBridge models from 2012-2014 have 1333 or 1600 memory speed so check to see it it's compatible.

If possible one should have a look at the slots/sockets, I have an inexpensive HP Notebook with an eMMC SSD that is soldered to the motherboard and recently junked an ASUS Notebook that could accept up to 12GB RAM but 4GB of that was soldered to the motherboard with a socket for adding a 4GB or 8GB module.

What can I say, the members of this forum make me feel like being with friends willing to help. I will replay to anyone. I just got and installed the RAM sticks I bought yesterday https://www.amazon.it/dp/B08J3NGCMH?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title
They are seen in BIOS and in the OS, after few minutes I can say everything is working good, I notice the laptop is more silent as the fan speed is lower as i did expect.
Thanks again to everyone, regards to all of you.

i found this for the spec of your system.

it states memory is DDR3 1333.
Crucial DDR3 1600 is backward compatible with DDR3 1333.

best of luck, Steve ..
Thank you Steve, this datasheet is very useful as the manual I got from Asus is a generic one for that series. The RAMI bought is working good and detected correctly in BIOS and OS. Thank you very much for your interest. Gas

Thank you very much @spapankos for your replay and your interest, the 2X4 GB sticks installed were 1600Mhz and detected with te right speed, the problem was that CPUZ showed 4 slots and also a CMD query showed maximum amount was 4X4 GB. The 2X8 GB I just received are detected with the right dimension and speed. Gas
