A possible ban on TP-Link routers -- one of the most popular router brands in the US -- is gaining momentum, as more than half a dozen federal departments and agencies back the proposal, according to a Washington Post report on Thursday.

The news first broke in December of last year, when The Wall Street Journal reported that investigators at the Departments of Commerce, Defense and Justice had all opened probes into the company due to national security risks stemming from its ties to China. (Learn how to protect yourself below.) Since then, news on the TP-Link front has been relatively quiet.

How many times do we have to have these kind of problems with Chinese hardware before people start to realize China is not our friend?
China isn't strong enough to invade the US, but they can destroy us from within if they get enough of the right kind of sensitive information.

Worst thing that could have ever happened was Nixon going to China, if it weren't for that China would pretty much still be a third world country. Now they have their claws so deep into the U.S. it's not even funny.

They have been urging bans on this router for quite some time now , but think about it , what could you possibly buy that DOESN'T have a Chinese chip or tech in it somewhere? you'd probably be hard pressed to find one.

Plenty of reasons that are appropriate for a Windows forum, such as Patent and Copyright violations, industrial espionage and theft, hardware-embedded spyware... but there are many more, if one is aware of events not mentioned in mainstream news outlets.

I've worked for quite a few large international companies in my time -- many US ones -- and I can assure you "Industrial Espionage" plus "patent infringement" -- never mind "Reverse Engineering " - which is still technically legal has been rife ever since commercial businesses started on this planet around 5,000 years ago.

It's not just the Chinese govt. I'd bet 1 billion dollars to a Chicago lake full of bovine excrement that the CIA would also be hugely interested if somebody outside the US for example developed an incredibly cheap fool proof 99% efficient Missile neutralising system. !!

Considering who's been in charge at CIA, you are not wrong.

It is not just the security aspect as you also have the Department of Justice conducting a criminal antitrust investigation into TP-Link because of its strategy of intentionally undercharging for its products to drive out competitors.

This should bring the tin foil hat wearers out in force.

There are times where things cross over, and this is one of those times.

I'm starting to see things built elsewhere, getting away from the reliance on China and all the chinaware the CCP dishes out. Computers built in Vietnam and Malaysia, HDDs built in the Philippines, SSDs built in S. Korea, iPhones built in India, etc... so there is inertia out there to change.

Let's face it, China is not our friend. They've been hostile to the United States since 1949 and have shown different degrees of that hostility since then. From outright war (1950 - 1953) to Bamboo Curtains to the reliance on their spyware of today. All in the name of saving a buck here or there built on their own convenient slave labor.

Folks - shunning China is a fool's plan. China is already way ahead of us in many areas of science, and they will be the leading world economy and power in 20-40 years. The old adage, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" could never be more appropriate. For the most part, American kids are lazy and unwilling to work to become the experts that we need. Our kids' math, science and reading scores are dropping every year. In some areas, 60% of kids are obese by the time they reach high school. Without foreign physicians, our medical system would collapse. I am an older white medical doctor, and I see our graduate science programs filled with mostly Asian students. As we limit these folks coming here, we are ruining our chances for future scientific discoveries. America was founded and built by immigrants, and we need them more then ever today, as our young population shrinks and our elderly continue to make up larger and larger portions of our society. Barry McGuire's words ring true even more today "But you tell me over and over and over again my friend, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction".

And playing with the CCP is an even bigger fool's plan. They know that we in the west are so dazzled by all the glitter and shiny new toys that they build that they hide behind all that to do their nefarious BS. Like the TP-Link routers mentioned above, which is not an isolated example. They believe that our own addictive materialism will bring us down and there's a good chance they might be right. And I say don't hand it to them. If they want it, they'll have to illegally get it. Out of principle, we should not hand anything to them on a silver platter and just slack off and pretend it's not a problem.

And don't confuse CCP Chinese with all Asians. There are other Asian countries besides mainland China, ya know. And many even in mainland China don't actively support the CCP, either. And China is getting aggressive with their neighbors as the news of the last few years tells us.

I'm not saying we can totally ignore them, but we don't have to be so reliant on them, either. There are other alternatives to many things we can look at and should look at. Especially when it comes to our strategic position and resources.

Let's get back to proper technical issues here .

-- in order to build things you need to have the actual building materials. If they don't exist in your home country and you can't use any alternative materials you have to source them from elsewhere - and even friendly countries will ensure that they will have enough for themselves before exporting to others.

Until sourcing almost unlimited amounts of material from space becomes a credible and cheap enough possibility smaller nations in particular will either have to do deals with "unfriendly regimes" or go without -- that;s usually the voters choice in countries with free elections. However even friendly nations can "turn nasty" when it suits them. I'm sure there's a whole slew of countries which are allies of the USA which have had the wind out of their economic sails knocked out of them by a single person at the top of the govt of the USA.

It's easy for the USA with huge resources to try and warn other countries about trading with the PRC but if you are operating a data centre say in Iceland (many international ones are setting up because of almost unlimited cheap energy and good 30 year fixed deals on tax and energy) - where do you get necessary replacement and new parts without importing stuff from the PRC, Korea etc. Relying on the USA currently doesn't seem a great idea as its policies can and do seem to change on a whim. China at least honors its trade deals according to the contracts its made for good or ill.

Time really to put this thread to bed and get back to Windows.
