Solved USAGE

Hi
I listen to the radio on my desktop overnight will it cause any problems with my Dell desktop while its running all night
i noticed screen does sleep music still plays?

no it will cause no harm or damage to your PC. most PC's are designed to run 24/7.
the screen going to sleep saves a bit on the power usage.

It would be cheaper to use a portable radio.

No damage. With rare exceptions our desktop has been powered on continuously since August of 2021.

I have a desktop PC that has been running 24 x 7 for 10+ years with only brief outages for standard servicing and maintenance and the occasional update. It still runs great but I retired it recently just due to age. It now just occupies space in a closet but is still a perfect PC.

EDIT: Correction, I looked at some dates and it looks like that machine has been running closer to 12 years.

My machine is on all the time, though it's sleeping overnight as a rule.

Multimedia playback usually prevents the computer from sleeping. However, the display sleeping is independent from that. You can use the keyboard or mouse to wake the display anytime.

I expect most radio stations stream their broadcast today. That way you can listen to the stream using a computer or phone. I use the TuneIn app to listen to radio stations on my computers and phone. With the app I have a choice of many thousands of radio stations. With only a portable radio you can only tune to a very small fraction of that.

BTW, another advantage is that I can actually hear a local radio station much better on my computer than a portable radio. On the portable radio the reception is poor many times during the day.

My desktop computers are on all the time but sleep after the designated timeout. That is no problem for my backup program which will wake the computer if needed to do the backup. I turn my laptops off every night but during the day when they are on they will sleep if idle for a designated time.

My oldest computer currently is a desktop which is over 15 years old. Late last year I retired a couple desktops that were over 22 years old.
