Windows 11 Professional (x64) Version 23H2 (build 22631.3737)
Small mini-pc (BeeLink SEi 8 Intel proc.) 16 GB Ram, 1 TB storage, 1 GB lan, 4K HDMI vs 2 graphics. This is long (sorry)

This PC is about a year old. And has had no issues up until July 10th this year.

I believe the problem started with two updates which were:

2024-07 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 23H2 for x64 (KB5039895) (which was successful on July 10th)
2024-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5040442) (which failed on July 10th)

Many attempts to install the 23H2 update have failed. No problem with the KB5039895) But after that July 10 update the following error immediately started.

The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.

Device Name: Port_#0005.Hub_#0001

Everything on the computer is functioning normally.
What is driving me crazy is the OP Sys is causing the "connect / disconnect" beep sound to play all the while the PC is running (about every hour or so)
I noticed the the Device manager will automatically refresh itself when the error happens. I have disabled the device and it keeps happening. I have uninstalled the device and the device manger screen shows no errors. And within an hour or so it fails agan and it is automatically popping back up as a failed device in the device manager.

I've remove all the attached USB devices AND a KVM switch and only had the KB/mouse wireless dongle plugged in along with the montior. (no KVM) No USB ports being used. No Joy.

I'll again uninstall the device. And the error is gone (for an hour) and comes back. I've turned off Windows updates, checked everything DISM, SFC and there are no errors

Thinking I have a corrupt or bad driver I have tried to remove and then update the drivers for that failed unknown USB device. ( And windows says the best drivers are already installed. ) So I uninstalled the drivers completely and unplugged the pc. Drained the electrical system, made sure every electron was gone. <grin> Plugged it back in and let windows start up and it reinstall the driver .. which is still showing it's failing and beeping all day.

I even went to the manufacturer and downloaded all the latest drivers for that PC and checked the bios for updates and still no joy. I am running out of ideas. I should also add that since July 10th while I have been trying fix this USB problem, the Windows 11 OS has been trying (and failing) to install KB5040442 So I'm hearing that windows USB connect sound 24/7 and the OS has tried to install that update now about 15 times. And yet this PC is running perfectly .. I could probably just "ignore" that update and turn OFF that windows USB sound manually and I would be okay. But I'm worried about the problem with the 23H2 build 22631.3737 that was installed on 1/‎27/‎2024 and now can not be updated. I wonder which problem I should keep trying to fix first? The broken USB or the broken Windows update?

I do not think the update is the issue. I believe it will prove to be a device or bad port.
I've remove all the attached USB devices AND a KVM switch and only had the KB/mouse wireless dongle plugged in along with the montior. (no KVM) No USB ports being used. No Joy.
That statement makes no sense. If you had your dongle plugged in you had to be using a usb port either on the computer OR a usb port on the monitor (if your monitor is equipped with usb ports).
What is confusing me is the hubs showing in device manager. That mini has 2 usb3 ports in front and 2 in back. Those are your 2 superspeed hubs. Yet device manager also shows 2 generic hubs which are usb 2.0 hubs. Do you have external usb 2.0 hubs connected? Since this is a process of elimination, you should be doing your testing using only the ports on your computer.

Keep KVM disconnected. Disconnect everything in any of the 4 usb ports on the computer. This includes any usb cable you may have going to your monitor(if your monitor has usb ports) and any external hubs or drives. Start your testing with the dongle plugged into one of the rear ports. If issue returns, move it to one of the front ports. If it still happens, I would suspect the dongle., FYI It is always best to test such issues with a wired keyboard and mouse rather than wireless.

If it works correctly in that configuration, connect any other devices one at a time, testing for an extended period of time before connecting another device.

Another FYI, eternal hubs can cause a ton of misery unless they are powered external hubs.

Thanks VERY much ... Yes it is strange. I HAVE removed the PC and put it on my work bench. And It was sitting there with the following connected (being tested every which way possible for a week)..

external 19v power supply.
GB NIC port (via cat8 cable to gb router)
1 of the two availble HDMI ports (to a 4K monitor) (monitor has an analog headphone out jack not used and a USB also not used)
1 of the 4 USB ports for the logitech KB/Mouse unifying dongle.

No joy. Have also tried the dongle in all four USB ports. No joy.
Also tried with no LAN connection. No joy

Also removed Unifying dongle and attached either a usb wired keyboard and/or a wired USB mouse. Again no joy

I have disconnected everything other than the hdmi monitor. And of course it boots and since I have no KB or Mouse or dongle attached I can not even log onto windows.

The monitor is attached to #1 HDMI port on the PC. I HAVE also tried that setup with all four of the PC's USB Ports using the Dongle. There is no other way to access any kb or mouse other than USB.

Update: THIS morning I found (as usual) windows had tried to do that update (which has been failing for several day) and for some reason this morning it was successful. Now I have this (this is I guess the other problem I had and I now have my Windows OS updated as below

Windows 11 Professional (x64) Version 23H2 (build 22631.3447) July 20, 2024 (Last failed update)
Windows 11 Professional (x64) Version 23H2 (build 22631.3880) July 21, 2024 (Todays successful update)

FWIW it's been trying to update that win vers since July 10th and finally worked on July 21.
However the original (driver problem?) still exists.

I am now concidering manually turning OFF that USB port ( Port_#0005.Hub_#0001). What are your thoughts on that?

You have done your troubleshooting well, trying the things I would have suggested and all the things I found on the web. @zbook is better for something like this than me.

I would like to share a similar issue I had, however. While I have no way of knowing for sure, I lean toward your issue being related to hardware, either connected hardware or the ports themselves. I say this because I battled a similar usb thing with constant connect/disconnect sounds. I spent a lot of time and hair pulling trying every configuration, test ,and solution I could find. Mine turned out to be caused by a external ssd that stayed connected all the time. I found that drive was causing the sounds within the first 5 minutes of troubleshooting, but being the hard-head that I am I wouldn't let myself believe it was defective since when I clicked on explorer, the drive was always accessible and worked fine despite those constant sounds. Also the same external ssd did not exhibit the same symptoms in another machine. I chalked it up to being related to marginal usb power in some way and just turned the connect/disconnect sound off at the time since everything worked. I eventually replaced the drive with an external m.2, turned the sound back on and no more annoying sounds. When I reconnect that original drive, yep, the sounds come back.

You can turn the sound off from control panel>sound>sounds tab>change both "device connect" and "device disconnect" to none

Under the assumption that you think it's a windows issue, there are other things you could try if you've a mind to. (You may or may not be spinning your wheels).
1. As crazy as it sounds see if the issue persists in a clean boot. It doesn't make sense an app would cause such a problem, but stranger things have happened. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot, you have some software conflicting with Windows. Brink's procedure will help you weed out which one. Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 11 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts Tutorial
2. Also see if it happens in safe mode. Boot to Safe Mode in Windows 11 Tutorial
3. As a safety measure, backup your personal data(if that data is not being synced to onedrive) and try a repair install. Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade Tutorial
4. Make an image of your machine using imaging software. Then start over clean by either doing a clean install or a system reset and remove everything. If your problem still exists, it's not windows. You can always restore your image.

Thanks zbook and glasskuter. Guess I've got a lot of info to digest. I'll need a couple days to go thru everything. It's somewhat complicated because in my twilight years I do a lot of movie and TV watching. <grin> And the PC in question is never shut off (except if there is a problem or needs service.) It's an HTPC that is always busy recording a ball game or movie 24/7. Been home bound last couple months rehabing after a hospital stay and am bored as heck. So life lately has been watching a lot of recorded TV shows. While troubleshooting this new problem I've already missed one exciting "epic battle" of one of my sports teams I follow. <sigh> So I gotta work on this problem at certain times when none of the three recording TV tuners are busy. I apologize if I don't get back to you quickly. <grin> If you are a N.Y. Met's fan you can understand my frustration.

I really appreciate the help. I'll get back to you soon with results. Reading from the data your program provided, I think I may have a problem with the PC motherboard's hardware.

Try this .. from the Beelink support web site. The driver file name is: 8259_2024-05-11_9-56-52.zip 460 MB
For the SEi-8 series mini PC. You'll see folders for the BIOS and Drivers.

Here's driver list ..

There are multiple types of drive tests.

A drive can pass one test and fail on another.

The drive tests can run overnight while sleeping.

(Macrorit and Sea Tools can run simultaneously on the same or different drives)

1) Run Sea Tools for Windows Long generic test > post images or share links

2) Open administrative command prompt and copy and paste: chkdsk /b /v

Run on all drives using the syntax chkdsk /b /v C: or chkdsk /b /v D: or chkdsk /b /v E: etc.

Make sure that the Windows drive runs overnight while sleeping.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk /b /v C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Type: y

Reboot as needed.

3) After completing all chkdsk tests run: chkdsk from event

Update .. I "think" I found what caused this problem. Got an idea to fix but want to do more research. I've BEEN doing all the suggestions and solutions we've talked about so far and I have to say most of them I have already done. But there were a couple (new to me) things previously posted here so I'm going thru the entire list.

I can not find (so far) ANY problem with any cable, externally connected USB device or ANY operational system problem other than the failed USB Port. As I've been saying all along .. I could just ignore the error that shows up in device manager and the sound windows makes as it is constantly scanning and finding a "false positive" which says it can not find the attached USB device. It can't find it because the device it's looking for is NOT connected. Sounds bizarre but I think this will ultimately be solved by my re-setting the mobo CMOS.

I THINK over the many days of troubleshooting and looking for answers I saw something HERE regarding that scenario long ago when I was browsing this forum for info (a year or two ago). I just can't find it at the moment. I think this is what happened.

I had this PC running as always (24/7) and on the night of June 9th. I had downloaded a movie. I have an external drive device (a Wavlink hot swappable USB 3 hard drive dock) I often leave an SSD drive in that device as a temporary storage for saving on line multimedia (movies etc). On the night in question I removed that drive to bring it over to a special PC set up to do video and audio editing.

Now even though that external drive device is supposedly "a hot swap type thing" I actually use the normal windows procedure for inserting and removing externally attached thumb drives and this external drive box. HOWEVER, that evening I just yanked it out so I could use it elsewhere. So I'm guessing the motherboard CMOS or something was in a state of searching for the missing drive? And 8 hours later my Win 11 system did a major update (and yeah I had all updates already on hold for a week) But for some reason, Windows did the update and the next morning when I turned on the monitor I was greeted with a "Windows needs to restart to finish the updates" etc. So I let it do so. (I NEVER normally do that and usually only allow updates after I've a chance review them)

And so the update was done and immediately upon restarting, my device manager showed that failed USB device for the first time.

So my idea is that the environment (somewhere or thing concerning my PC and/or OS) had something done during the update that was out of the normal and it got permanently "confused". Maybe even more confused than ME. ? <grin>

I vaguely remember that post where a user had with a similar problem, which was that he even wiped the PC system clean and did full virgin install of windows with new clean HD and the problem STILL existed. Darn .. I wish I could find that thread.

Anyway I'm at the point where I'm gonna drain and clear the PC CMOS and hope it 1. fixes this, and 2. doen't screw up my existing system). Problem is this micro tiny sealed up mini pc is not something that I built and I just gotta figure out how to get at, and short out and drain the cmos. There is a small hole in the front of it that I think can be used to reset the PC to factory specs.)? Gotta get in touch with Beelink <ugh> and research that. I'll let you know what I find. Stay tuned. BTW I did just finish making a full drive image first.

I think there is something going on between the windows OS and the Motherboard CMOS that is causing the OS to be constantly trying to reattach ? to a previously removed SSD and it lost that saved data and so is trying to find an unknown device that is actually NOT attached ??? Apologies to all for exposing you to my obviously weird thought process. <grin>

I believe I've solved this problem. Been running now with no more errors for most the day. I'll wait a couple more days and when I can confirm the fix worked I'll post here.

I only needed to do a proper reset of the main board's CMOS.
