Compatibility report: Windows Media Center for Windows 8/10 installed and working successfully in Windows 11! So if you need to use the good old Windows Media Center (control Windows with a remote control, play and share all your media files) from Windows Vista and Windows 7, there is a modified installation that installs WMC in Windows 10 and 11. I don't remember where I had downloaded from, sorry. Just Google it.

Microsoft removed Windows Media Center from Windows 10, and there’s no official way to get it back, but the community has made Windows Media Center functional on Windows 10.

As far as Microsoft is concerned, you can just keep using Windows 7 or 8.1 if you want Windows Media Center, although that’s becoming more and more difficult. Microsoft isn’t interested in supporting Windows Media Center any longer.

This process involves downloading a modified Windows Media Center application, if you’re uncomfortable with that, this may not be for you. We tried it ourselves and ran into no problems, the file shows up as clean on multiple malware scanners. I have uploaded these two compressed files to my Google Drive, the download links are below.

The downloaded archive is a .7z file, so you’ll also need to download and install 7-Zip to open it.

Once you have, you can right-click the downloaded .7z file in File Explorer and select 7-Zip > Extract Here from the context menu.

6CvHb6J.png

You’ll get a folder. Open the extracted WMC folder, right-click the “_TestRights.cmd” file, and select “Run as Administrator”. A Command Prompt window will open, and you can close it.

p7KXUd6.png

You can then right-click the “Installer.cmd” file and select “Run as Administrator.”

YcKO4Rr.png

You’ll see the progress of the installation in a Command Prompt window. Don’t close the window until you see the “Press any key to exit” message.

FqGVmRp.png

If you’ve previously installed this pack or if you upgraded from Windows 7 or 8.1 and previously had Windows Media Center installed, you may need to right-click the “Uninstaller.cmd” file and select “Run as Administrator” to remove any leftover bits of Windows Media Center before it will install normally. This is also the file you need to run if you ever want to completely uninstall Windows Media Center.

Type Windows Media Center into Start Menu, and it will appear in your Start Menu as a normal application you can launch.

If you encounter another problem, open the Workarounds.txt file for more information. This file contains a list of problems people have encountered and fixes known to work.

While Windows Media Center currently works, it’s possible that future changes to Windows 10 might break it.

I found a newer version a couple of months ago, I think is version 8.8.4 There are two versions to download, the blue version with the original blue background and the green version with a green background. The latest version is 8.8.5, but I could not find a working download for it. If you Google "Windows Media Center 8.8.4" you will probably find a download site, sorry I don't remember which is the one. One bug I have found is that if you are running the English version of Windows (not your local language version), the EPG tries to show the English version of TV Guide. In Greece there is only a Greek version for most channels, so these channels display no information when opening the TV Guide. I tried to change the display language of Windows to Greek so Windows Media Center was running in Greek. It worked once and I could use the TV Guide for all channels, but after a few restarts it didn't work anymore. I then read somewhere of how to tweak some keys in Registry to change the locale to Greek in WMC, but this did not last either. Other than that, it works as expected.

I installed Windows Media Center 8.8.4 on a brand new install of Windows 11. All the steps seem to work as described. A desktop shortcut is created. When I search in the start menu the Media Center app appears. When I try to launch it from the shortcut or in the start menu nothing happens. If I run as administrator it seems to try to start but WMC window never appears. Am I missing something? I am jumping from Windows 7 to 11 so some learning curve for me. Thanks.

I use WMC to schedule TV recordings from my DVB-T card. The problem is the not-so-common WTV format. I couldn't open it with any of the known applications, such as Nero Video, VirtaldDub, AVS Video Converter. A little Google search and I found WTV Converter: Fast convert WTV file to any video like MP4 in batch
Also WMC takes exclusive control of the TV card even when closed, and I cannot use the card in other applications such as Arcsoft Total Media 3.5

Finally downloaded and installed Windows Media Center.
1. Can now retire the Windows 8/Dell PC
2. Installed and enabled WMC V8.8.1x64
3. Using EPG123 for OTA programming guide
4. Happy to have a familiar multi-media viewer with a TV tuner.
Thanks to all who have contributed to this success.
The perseverance paid off.

I hate when Microsoft decides to remove some features from newer Windows versions. Thanks to the contribution of third parties we can get them back, such as Windows Vista/7 gadgets, classic Windows games, Windows Media Center etc. Thanks to all of you helping us.

I have a different custom version of Windows Media Center. In my version I have an uninstall script and an install script. Running the install script from a Command Prompt as Administrator, it takes full system access rights so it can copy the necessary files and create the appropriate Registry keys. After restart I get a working Windows Media Center. I haven't yet tested it on 22H2, but in 21H2 it works fine, as in Windows 10. The uninstall script removes all files and Registry entries, just in case WMC doesn't work properly and you need to reinstall it. Just installing it again doesn't work. You have to uninstall it first running the script, restart and then install it again.

Compatibility report: After upgrading Windows 11 21H2 to 22H2 most extra applications need also to be updated. Others, including Windows Media Center, stop working and must be reinstalled. I ran the blue version install script and terminated because WMC was already installed (but wasn't working). So I ran the uninstall script, restarted and then ran the blue version install script again. This time it copied all the necessary files and Registry entries and worked. So yes, Windows Media Center works in Windows 11 22H2 too, but you have to uninstall it and reinstall it first.

This is normal. Every upgrade messes with tweaks, customizations and any extras.
The links provided may not work but this link provides the msi, to install it straight into your device "and windows 11" without using Command Prompt WMC on Win10/11
