Visual refresh of Office apps for Windows 10 and Windows 11

  • Staff
Hi, Office Insiders! I’m Kori Loomis, a Program Manager on the Office Experience team. I am delighted to share with you the visual refresh of the Office desktop apps for Windows 10 and Windows 11. This visual update delivers a simple and more coherent experience across the Office apps you depend on, so that you can focus on your work more easily.

Visual refresh

As announced last week, the newly released Windows 11 OS will be available this week to Dev Channel users in the Windows Insiders program, and offer a new, fresh user experience. In alignment with this release, we are also releasing an Office visual refresh that will shine on the new Windows 11 OS, but will also be available to anyone using Windows 10.

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on Windows 11

This Office visual refresh is based on feedback from customers who asked for a more natural and consistent experience within and between your applications, specifically on Windows. With this update, we deliver an intuitive, coherent, and familiar user interface, using the Fluent Design principles, across all your applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Access, Project, Publisher, and Visio. We aligned this visual refresh with the design of Windows 11 to provide seamless experiences on your PC.

How it works

This visual refresh will be automatically available to any Office Insiders running Beta Channel builds. It can easily be turned off using the Coming Soon feature, located in the top right corner of the menu. In Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote, simply click the megaphone icon to open the Coming Soon pane, read more about the visual refresh changes, and use the toggle to move between the new and current interface, and apply the setting to all the Office apps.

Coming Soon feature

Also note that:
  • The Coming Soon feature is not available in Access, Project, Publisher, or Visio. If you turn on the visual refresh in any of the 4 apps mentioned above (Work Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote), it will also be available in these 4 apps.
  • Though the Coming Soon feature is available in Outlook, it can’t be used to turn the visual refresh on and off. If you turn on the visual refresh in any of the 4 apps mentioned above (Work Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote), it will also be available in Outlook.
Scenarios to try
  • Create your pitch deck in PowerPoint while referencing Word and Excel for the information you need. Notice the default neutral color palette, customizable ribbon, and soft corners, across these three apps.

  • Share your presentation using Outlook and notice the cohesive interface which helps you stay in the flow.

  • Review a blog draft you had written in Word with your teammates. Notice the colorful presence indicators in the top right corner of the menu bar, which help you quickly find where your teammates are co-authoring in real time.

Tips & Tricks
  • Office theme: Office now matches your Windows theme so you can experience the visual refresh in whichever Office theme you prefer, including black (Dark Mode), white, colorful, or dark grey.

    Dark-Mode-in-Word-in-SV_NEW.png

  • Quick Access toolbar: It is now hidden by default to make your interface simpler. To display it again, simply right-click the ribbon or click the Ribbon Display Options icon, and then click Show Quick Access Toolbar.
Known issues
  • The team’s focus has been on primary app surfaces like the ribbon and document canvas. As a result, there will still be some color and style inconsistencies across different UI surfaces. The backstage (i.e. File menu) is not yet updated.
  • There is currently a bug with animations in our apps on Windows 11, which can make transitions look less polished.
  • The Mica background effect has not yet been added to our apps. It will be coming in a future update.
  • The preview gallery for Data types and Shapes have a color bug in dark grey theme. Please expand the gallery to view contents while we resolve this issue.
  • There is a bug where the document title appears misaligned within the title bar.
Availability

(7/2) UPDATE: We apologize for the delay in making this much anticipated visual refresh available to you. We expect to release a new build, with this update, next week.

This visual refresh is available to Beta Channel users running build Version 2107 Build 14228.20000 or later on Windows 11 or Windows 10.

Here the menu area is not dark, but being open source, this is unlikely to change. However, the possibility to type white on black has existed forever. Why is Microsoft only beginning to implement it now, is beyond my understanding. This is by far more important than how the window corners are designed or how the ribbon looks like.
You can use a trick!
Select "Black" (Word>Account>Office Theme). Go to "Design" menu and in "Page Color" section select "Black" color.

Of course you can do that. But that's not the "dark mode": if you print the document created this way, the background would still be black. The idea of the "dark mode" is that on your screen the background is dark, but on paper (when you print it) it's white.

You are insider and your build number is 2108 (as MS said new refresh UI is released on this build number). Do you have it?! Is there any thing like "Simplified Ribbon" option?!

Pretty sure I said exactly that in my post. But thanks for pointing out what was in my screenshots.

I said "Trick"! Not as a permanent solution!

You can disable the "BG's color printing" option though! Go to "Word Options/Display" and uncheck "Print background colors and images" option (SS below).

It would work for you as a trick to bypass current DM (=dark mode, with white BG) till you get official release of current insider version 2108 (with whole DM mode, black or dark BG).

I didn't understand! Your SS shows ribbon as current "2019" and "2021 preview" versions (with no "Simplified Ribbon" mode). Do you have that in your current O365 insider 2108 version?! I mean "Simplified Ribbon", neither dark mode nor "New Refresh UI" (IMO, New Ruined UI).

It's weird.

I have it in Outlook; I have just tabs, and each tab I click on shows a single row of items, rather than the full ribbon:

But in Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, there is no simplified ribbon. Collapsing the ribbon to tabs only shows tabs only, but clicking on any tab shows the full ribbon not the simplified one.

Which makes sense, everything I'm seeing for anything other than Outlook is for the corresponding web versions only.

Got it!

It's normal! That's the old one (enabled only for WEB versions and enabled for desktop version just for Outlook!). it's the same since 2019!

I am seeing MS Office stuff's screenshots (and official videos from MS about Office updates) they are using "Simplified Ribbon" on O365 "Desktop" version since 2018, but they just enabled and released official version of it (SR) only for Outlook! Cut it or release it! It's nonsense to be about 3 years in trial (or Beta or Alpha) mode! It's not Google, It's Microsoft!!

I have O365 too but nothing here! (not insider, stable version and latest update). I have installed "2021 preview for Enterprises" but nothing here too!

Not gonna lie - the Outlook simplified is pretty friggin' nice. Wouldn't mind one in the other apps. Especially if it is customizable (which the regular ribbon is pretty customizable, so I don't see why the simplified one would not be).

My apology, I think there is misinterpretation! I am not saying you are lying!

I know it's (SR=Simplified Ribbon) released (officially) just for Outlook (in Desktop version not the Web version). As I know there is an option to get back classic ribbon (in Outlook), just by right click on ribbon and select "Classic Ribbon" (I don't use Outlook, just installed it one year ago to see and try SR on it).

IMO the SR was one of the most practical update for MS Office since version 2007, at least for me (I never used 2007, just a jump from 2003 to 2010).

They killed it!!!

Also, Not gonna lie is a cliche phrase, just like To be honest - I was neither implying that I was lying before, nor that I thought you thought I was lying lol.

For me the new skin only works on Excel, on Word or PowerPoint everything remains exactly as before. I installed Office with Office Tool Plus, 64bit, and tried ProPlus2021 Retail, Volume and LTSC, all versions 14.3XX and later.

Is there any way to activate the new skins manually, or from the registry?

Well for insiders, it will be phased and when stable comes, everyone gets it. Make sure you have the what's new turned on

Hi there
I think EXCEL cells can be switched so you can have black cells with white texts but I haven't seen anyway to do that in Word. --See next post --Word / Outlook fixed.
I'll experiment around with a few VM's with different office builds and themes to see if anything works.

Outlook works too with black background and white text BTW in dark themes.

Note you have to enable dark mode in Windows as well as just the dark mode theme in Office itself. Should be obvious but it's easy to forget those "little things".

Cheers

Hi folks
Word, Outlook does indeed do black with white text. Excel has menus inblack with white text but workheets still white cells -- I'm checking a way to see if the cells can be changed - probably something like Cell background colour.

Anyway you have to enable the dark theme in Windows OS itself and then enable black in the Office theme (in account ->properties).

Here's word

Excel sort of works but I can't get grid (cell) lines in white and it seems you have to do it for each workbook. Click on the corner of the worksheet to the left of cell A1.

I'm om Office Pro Plus LTSC 2021.

If anybody can point the right way -- thanks.

Excel would need to support the page to be black, currently this is not an option. Odd how they don't implement the same theming across all the office apps. Always seems so incomplete, much like Windows, some innovative ideas, and then neglected. Outlook still has animations from Office XP days, reported this many moons ago, MS decides to ignore.

@SM03 I am on Office 2021 LTSC version. The MICA effect isn't available for the LTSC version. There is no way to implement that on this version.
