Now Winamp works properly again on W11 !!!!!! .

I like winamp because for music tagging it has built in access to GRACENOTE Music DB which if you like Classical Music is much better for tagging than the various free music DB's around. I often create "Virtual Music CD's " -- ripping real CD's via WINAMP and tagging before a transfer to Minidisc - I can get several "Equivalent" CD's on to a single Minidisc and using a Pro studio quality recorder (DRM free etc) to transfer lossless flac to MD and play through decent speakers -- Studio reference grade -- Brilliant !!!!!

BTW NERO can also create "Virtual CD's" needs the C++ files too but mounting .nrg files as Audio CD's in WIN11 seems problematical currently -- works in XP (in a VM though - the download worked for XP as well.

Here's that old trusty WINAMP working correctly again !!!!!!

I've started using WACUP as an alternative to WinAmp, though it still runs on top of WA.

Left winamp years ago Mediamonkey Gold does everything I need and just been revamped with version 5

I just tried 0.68...first time using this AIO...I previously used TechPowerUp. Everything installed...and it removed previous installed versions of Runtimes. Quick question...what is minimum vs. additional runtimes? This AIO seems to install double the number of Runtimes as TechPowerUp and standard Microsoft Uninstaller? What's the difference.

Okay, I'm in one of my many areas of ignorance here, so I have to ask why, when I ran .68, I now have 22 (twenty-two) C++ entries in Installed Apps, whereas before I used .68, I had 1 (one), 14.34.31931 ????

Where are you seeing that (minimum versus additional)? Once I can find it I can better explain it.

As noted in the first post. the contents of this package are ALL the current VisualC ++ Runtime modules - there is not just one - there are multiple ones, split into versions of Visual C++.

All of that above is in there packages. If you've not needed additional VC redistributable packages up until now, you just installed this for nothing.

The good news - it doesn't hurt anything at all.

• It takes up some space, but not a lot - around 200 MB or so.
• Any particular runtime (version) that is needed by a future program is already installed now, so will not need to be installed when installing said program.

Under Settings>Apps>Installed Apps, or Control Panel>Programs and features. Originally I would simply see x86 and x64 versions of each runtime for affected years. Now, it almost doubled...there are four. Two each for x86 and x64... "minimum runtimes" and "additional runtimes." I don't ever recall seeing them broken out this way whether individually installing from Microsoft or using the TechPowerUp All in One installer.

Original question:

Can someone help a non-developer understand the following? in the context of Visual Studio?

1. what is the difference between a Redistributable and a Runtime? in terms of how applications use each?
2. does an x86 program require an x86 redistributable/runtime? and same for x64? or can x64 programs leverage x64 redistributables/runtimes?
3. do redistributables & runtimes only come in Visual C++ flavors? why is that? (does the program that needs these also need to be written in C++?)
4. there are so many versions of these Visual C++ Redistributables & Runtimes. On one machine with accounting software I see 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2019. Why so many? Wouldn't the latest one work in place of all the older ones?
5. What is the difference between a runtime, a minimum runtime and an additional runtime? I see a combination of these on one machine. Why didn't they just create one runtime and call it a day? Why two?
6. Do Redistributables & Runtimes have vulnerabilities from time to time? Are they patched in the same manner as any Windows update? or do you have to manually find them, download and install?
7. Do older ones that are no longer getting new builds have vulnerabilities just because they are so old?
8. If an old Visual Studio version has vulnerabilities, would the corresponding C++ Redistributable have those same vulnerabilities? Runtime?

The most complete answer:

1. A runtime is a set of software libraries that you can use in your software that you are building. Some runtimes (like .net) for jit frameworks include build tools as well as libraries.
   A redistributable is an installer package that deploys the runtime.
2. Yes. or well it depends. C++ redists come in cpu flavours x86 etc, you need the right one that the program targets. Some redists bundle them together.
3. No there are difffernt kinds of runtimes .net java etc as wel as microsoft c++ runtimes. You need the right one for the language / taget you used to make the software.
4. Historically with the MS C++ runtimes they were shipped individually as back in teh day hard drive space was at a premium and you only shippe exactly what you needed. The latest versions now are backward compatible (for a few supported versions).
5. Again the runtimes were split into small chunks to allow a smaller hard disk footprint when HD prices were high.
6. Yes all software has vulnerabilities. The vendor will update them if required up to a point. MS written runtimes will be pushed out via windows update.
7. Yes. But sometimes, if its really bad MS will update really old versions. There is no guarantee of this though. Each prodcut has a support lifecycle you can check.
8. Yes if the vulnerability was in the runtime. if was was in the IDE or a build tool that is not shipped to the end user then no.

BTW, similar differences apply when looking at .NET version installers as well, with the names being a bit different, but also their functionalities are a bit different.

Basically, in the case of the Visual C++ Runtimes, the minimum packages will be sufficient for *most* programs that rely on that generation package (2005, 2010, etc. being the generation I'm referring to). The Additional packages make your system compliant with *any* generational requirement by a program.

So, IOW, a program that is advertised as requiring VC++ 2010 runtimes, may be able to use just the minimal package, but definitely will be able to use the combined minimum + additional packages as its requirements.
