Hi, I have the chance to purchase a refurb Asus Expert book at a very good price. It has 24gb Ram, i5, 1T NVMe SSD, IPS display.
I use the laptop solely for downloading films and tv series, a few emails and surfing the net. Ideally I only need W 11 home and not Pro which I think this machine has. My budget wont allow me to purchase a Home key from microsoft for I believe about £90.00. The Pro features are of no use to me. I shall download Edge, Outlook and a search engine. My questions, can I operate the laptop using "home" features only and completely ignore "Pro" features or do these come into play, like it or not. Are there reputable key providers which are a lot cheaper than microsoft. TIA.

For the average computer user there is no difference at all between Home and Pro
Pro does have more Utilities for User and Systemmanagement.. but no drawbacks for Home Edition at all for general use.

Windows 11 Home and Pro share a lot of the same core features, including things like Windows Hello, Snap Layouts, the Microsoft Store, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirements, and built-in security features like Microsoft Defender. For general everyday use, Home works fine — you can browse, stream, work with Office, and run most software without restriction.

Where the big differences start showing is in control and security. Windows 11 Pro includes full BitLocker drive encryption (not just device encryption), support for Group Policy, the ability to join Active Directory or Azure AD domains, and powerful tools like Hyper-V for virtualization. It also adds Remote Desktop hosting (so you can connect into the machine), Assigned Access to lock the device to a single app, and Windows Update for Business which gives you control over when updates are installed.

For anyone who likes to tweak settings, manage multiple user accounts, or run virtual machines, Pro is the way to go. It also supports enterprise-level features like Credential Guard and WIP (Windows Information Protection). The Home edition leaves these out to keep things simpler for the average user.

If you have a chance to get PRO without paying any money, for goodness sake, go with it.
I am no where near being a power user but I have owned only PRO for 30 years.

Many members here use Stack Social. And if I recall, first time signups get a discount on first order.
They also run deals occasionally. I don’t see one for Windows, currently. But still much cheaper than Microsoft.

Windows Pro all the way, especially for free over Home!!! I use RDP all the time, and I like the fact that I can use the policy editor, that just to name a couple advantages. I don't use Hyper-V right now, but I have in the past, and you never know when you might have a use for it.

There's no downside that I know of by going Pro.

My current laptop is a 13 year old Acer running W 10. I have the usual windows defender security and a Nord VPN, I download Torrents.

I appreciate your time and trouble in detailing the various apps in Pro but apart from security it is unlikely I shall ever need to use them. I wouldnt say I am thick when it comes to operating a laptop but I make Kamal Harris look intelligent.
I havent done a very good job of explaining my laptop usage. Your last para lists some apps/programmes that are in the Pro edition, none of which I will need. Do these various apps/downloads operate and come up on the screen only if I have activated them. A bit like a car with a super charger which only comes on if a switch is thrown, otherwise it never appears.
I have never used W11 so I have that pleasure ahead of me. From what you and others have said I shall stay with Pro and see how I get on. I shall only download "Home" as a lats resort.
In that respect thank you so much for the info and prices.

Your laptop, are you aware if it comes with any pre embeded keys for a particular OS (Home or Pro)?

And for future reference, could you please update your ”System Specs” please add at least the model number that should be listed under the laptop

I am unclear on why you would want to remove the Pro version and replace it with Home?
Pro benefits are only applicable if you’re needing to utilise them, downgrading to Home will gain no benefit to the operation of Windows, it wont be faster or any different at all, most likely.

Right, they're present if you want to use them, but it's not like the Hyper-V console pops on your screen at random, asking you to use it. Same for the other Pro features.

The only real problem is the display but this is fine provided it is IPS but I stand to be corrected.

If you don't need the extra features activated in Pro then don't use them, if it isn't costing you anything more. I guess I am failing to understand something beyond what seems to be the simple solution to me.

Windows 11 Home, however, will activate with the Windows 11 Pro digital license in place for that computer at Microsoft. If the Windows 11 Pro key is embedded in BIOS, then you will have to do a completely manual install of Windows 11 Home (which is easy). Or create a custom ISO file with nothing but Windows 11 Home on it. There may also be a tutorial on this site for downgrading Windows 11 Pro to Home in place.

If the Pro version is free, get the Pro version. I don't know if the home version of Win 11 will allow you to pick your own lock screen image, but the Pro version does! That might be one advantage.
