WATCH OUT FOR RAM PRICES!

I purchased some G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 64GB Kit (2x32GB) DDR5-6000 C30 for my next build in September for $405 AUD.
Today it is now $1299 AUD.
The motherboard and CPU prices have not moved much.

These RAM prices might be the corporate world making ordinary consumers subsidize AI data centers, and it won't stop there, because the DATA centers will sit right on top of aquifers and pollute our drinking water, while the cost of energy will continue to rise, because the ones that are planned will consume more electricity than the entire nation of India. In other words, Google AI has already enslaved us.

Not sure whether that's sarcastic hyperbole or I'm being serious, because 4:20 and all that...but it's all fact.

CORRECT and correction. Stop buy brand new RAM. You can get used much cheaper.

BUT... As this thread already attests, people will pay these ridiculous exorbitant prices anyway. They don't mind paying 3X the original price because they don't care. All they know is that they want it. Cater to the master/munny to burn.

*So glad I bought my last batch of 128GB from Micron.

In the US, electricity rates are set state-by-state by the "Public Service Commission" or some similar organization. Usually these organizations are very pro-utility, with predictable results.

I completely agree. The fiat funny stuff has to come from somewhere. Where else if it doesn't come from we, the plebs? The solution is obvious but the number of individuals receptive to engaging in participating in the obvious solution is microscopic. "Just say no" didn't work in the 80's and it won't work today. Tables have turned. We are all expected to serve the corporate BEAST while it continues to assure us that it is here to serve us. AI has become an apocalyptic nightmare. None of us really needs it and only a few of us are prepared to reject it.

I won't be building or upgrading any PC's in the near future.

On the flip side, for the first time in as long as I can remember, the price of RAM upgrades on Apple Devices seem way more reasonable. LOL.

I'll be focusing more of my energy on restoration and repair. I still do the occasional repair and restoration in my community. When you live in a small town word gets around. I won't rebuild laptops anymore. Too old for that now. I have tons of RAM of all sorts. I don't have any DDR5 RAM. TBH I have never worked on a PC using DDR5 system memory.

Most people wouldn't notice much difference, given the rest of the system is solid. The exceptions being the time it takes for unpacking updates, installing new software and other operations involving compression/decompression or encryption (which is where RAM capacity and bandwidth really matter).

I guess ram was always going to get more expensive now that so many laptops and computers come with onboard ram. It's pretty much the standard now I think. Maybe it's just not lucrative any more for manufacturers.

This may be due to the transition to a new type of memory (Non-Binary 3 GB ICs).
Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung stole Christmas this year.

As I said earlier, I'd be keeping an eye out for Micron. Alas, what I feared might happen appears to be happening. Really can't blame the manufacturers for this. They have to cater to the market and right now the market is in AI. It's an apocalyptic nightmare, folks, this Artificial Image.. Buckle your seat belts coz it's about to get ugly.

At this point it might not matter much. Even if the few remaining stay in the desktop memory arena this will cause a further drain on the system due to shortages which will simply keep prices inflated due to "Supply" issues. So they will make(or can charge) extra $$$$$ either way.
Mining --> Covid --> Mining again --> GPUpochalypse --> AI causing severe memory and SSD shortages. SSD prices are already heading up.

According to reporting by Techpowerup Dell are going to increase prices by 15 - 20% before the end of the year. Lenovo are going to follow. This is because of the increase in the prices of ram.

Industry sources cited by TrendForce say Dell is preparing to implement a 15-20% price hike as early as mid-December. The reason? Obviously, the recent DRAM prices, especially DDR5 that jumped around 70% year-over-year, with certain parts spiking more than 170%. Dell COO Jeff Clarke recently warned that he has "never seen memory-chip costs rise this fast," as component prices surge across the board. The other giant OEM, Lenovo, has begun notifying customers that pricing will rise in early 2026.
