Why would it be available to the domestic end user? I guess maybe some folks would want long-term storage like that, but there are other formats more accessible and affordable to the home user for long-term storage.

And sorry, I just don't share your outlook of doom and gloom, oh the capitalists are out to get us, fear the AI, all that jazz. We do agree that what you said is ridiculous, but probably not for the same reason.

There is a vast difference between capitalism and corporate monopolies. I'm all for capitalism, my friend. Monopolies kill free enterprise and that is not conducive to capitalism. Competition keeps capitalism alive and thriving. Richard Stallman I am not. The reality is that thousands of jobs are being lost to AI practically every day. Trust me, pseymour, you'll be seeing more of this as AI continues to prevail. I don't believe there is an AI bubble. I think the push is on to get us off conventional computers and on the cloud based servers. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion but likewise so am I.

I suspect that we will be seeing more of this as well. It is getting increasingly difficult to communicate with a genuine human entity even for help on the telephone. Level One Techs has a YouTube channel out called Links with Friends and they are constantly sharing news articles of more jobs lost to AI. The numbers are appalling to say the least. I understand why so many in the tech industry are pooh-poohing these concerns: They're afraid. They don't want it to be true so they are in denial. As for myself, I am from another time so it does not matter so much to me as it would if I were a younger man. That is not to say that it doesn't affect me or my loved ones. Even my daughter, who once had her sights set on software engineering, is now having second thoughts about her career choices because of AI. So far most of the trades people are safe but that doesn't mean that AI won't affect us all. It can, it will, and it does.

It's the price we have to pay for what is now an indispensable part of our future lives. Knowing we will not have to apply any intellectual effort or critical thinking to our daily existence is such a relief.

Yes, using my brain for these last 70 years has been so effing tiring. It will be so nice in the next few years to not have to think at all, just let AI do everything for me. And what a waste my life was working all that time. Having to read and think and design and test. Wish I could have had AI so I did not have to do anything, let AI do it all for me. I could have just been writing books about sarcasm that whole time.

As I stated earlier, anything silicon. CPUs are now on the list for price increases. Intel is reporting a 15% increase. No idea if AMD has officially reported anything as of yet.

I don't expect to see RAM prices drop back to what they were in the spring of 2025. Even if that "bubble" pops AI isn't about to disappear and RAM will always be ridiculously expensive. The only thing I see changing this is if it gets replaced with something else. That won't be happening any time soon.

If Microsoft gets their way, we'll all be computing on-line, and our "home" computer will just be a terminal again. Harkens back to the 1970's-80's, I was developing an "on-line" accounting system using IBM Selectric terminals on an IBM-360 mainframe. We had blazing fast 300 baud dial-up modems connecting to our system. At least we'll have faster links to the mainframe! :lmao:

Unless you just have to have the latest and greatest, I just bought one of these. Western Digital VelociRaptor WD6000HLHX 600GB SATA 3.5" Hard Drive for $30. Yes, the boot speed is a bit slower, but I was shocked on how efficient this drive was once booted to the desktop. Maybe it's my old eyes, but I can tell the difference between my Samsung M.2 and this Western Digital drive as for as opening any of my apps, or just browsing the internet. As far as ram, my old box still uses DDR3 and I must have 200 gigs of that laying around.

A very ordinary 4 TB WD Blue HDD that was around 90 about 6 or 8 months ago is now 225 at my standard source. I have no idea if that is AI-related.
