After the billions and billions (no offence to Karl) invested in those huge server farms start getting power (and they will) the demand for silicon is likely not about to diminish significantly. In fact, at that point the cost of silicon may simply continue to increase. These huge conglomerates, including the Consortium* that I tire of explaining about, have far too much invested in their projects to turn about and follow a different path. To make silicon reasonably affordable again something far more drastic must occur, say a viable alternative to silicon that is exponentially more economical. That would make the house of cards come crashing to ground zero. I seriously doubt that will happen any time soon.

*Incidentally, they no longer call themselves the Consortium. Someone must have thought it was too heavy handed or bold.

One thing that certainly isn't falling is RAM prices. That said it isn't just random access memory that has gone through the roof with respect to pricing. All memory including SSDs (SATA and NVMe) has increased in price exponentially. Incidentally I found a page that still refers to the Trusted Computing Group as a Consortium. Yup. The members of this group all conspired together to bring us our wonderful TPM (which is more trouble than it is worth) and those other things that rendered PCs less than five years old and older obsolete in the eyes of Microsoft. No theory about it — just the plain facts.

Yup. They're all jumping on the silicon band wagon. Intel has already stated that CPU prices are about to go up.

Unless you’re just an impatient soul and you need five second boot up speed.
I bought a couple of these on eBay for $30 with free shipping. Once you’re into the desktop, you would have to have Superman eyes to notice the difference, between the speed of a sata and this drive. Western Digital VelociRaptor WD6000HLHX 600GB SATA 3.5" 10,000 rpm Hard Drive. I partitioned this drive with only about 150 gig on the C partition. I also have a few of the Samsung M.2 and Samsung sata drives, I bought a year or so ago. I just wanted to experiment with this, I was really shocked that how fast this drive is. Now, of course, if you need a larger drive and boot speed, these would not be for you. 😁

I probably overbought last spring when I built my two computers and bought a new laptop. My two computers, main and backup, both have 10Tb of storage, 6TB of SSD and 4TB of HDD. I also have two 4TB off-line SSD drives for air-gapped backup, and a NAS as well. I'm not anticipating needing any memory for quite some time, so memory prices are strictly a spectator sport for me. ;-)

I had some trident-z g.skill 64GB (2x32GB) 6400MT/s CL32-39-39-102 DDR5 laying around. It cost me $218 in 2024. Was talking to my son who just built his first computer. He went "cheap" on the DDR5 and could use more capacity so I gave it to him. Then I looked at the current price on Amazon and it is $940. Nice gift huh. :-)

I checked the current price of my 2x48 6800 MT/s CL34 g.skill and it is up to $1300 now. Cost me $390.

My systems have 64GB and 32GB of RAM, more than sufficient for the foreseeable future. :)

While I see the memory prices are an issue, for the vast majority of the computer users, they're not going to be buying nearly as much RAM or disk storage for their uses, so I don't think this is a crippling issue. I think a lot more people are concerned by the price of gas. :lmao:

I have four WD VelociRaptor WD600HLHX 600GB SATA 3.5" in a RAID 10 array on HBA. They have served me for well over a decade. For a mechanical drive they're pretty snappy and they've out lasted several other mechanical drives including a few silicon drives. I know precisely the babies you are referring to. Good choice! Sure. Corruption exists in all sorts of forms. Capitalism isn't immune to corruption. It merely amounts to a beautiful thing gone wrong. I can only speak for myself, but I am from another time and I am witnessing a beautiful thing gone wrong. It's killing Free Enterprise. Samsung has already stated that prices for RAM are expected to increase into 2027. Corporate Monopolies aren't about to keel over and die no matter what the media says. No, not when AI is determining what the best moves to make on the Stock Market are. Brokers might do well to start looking for alternate means of income because their jobs are about to vanish. I'm not certain how much I am permitted to state here. I hate debating politics but this goes beyond politics. This process goes directly for the jugular: economics. Because RAM is a commodity it is reflecting something much more disconcerting. Our current monetary system will not be able to bear what is about to transpire. Perhaps the push is deliberate but methinks things are about to get a whole lot worse before we see any improvement. If the sky is falling then that would be the exception because the cost of living certainly isn't.
