They will do what they are best at : Juggling their lucre between each other in the name of profits and ill-gotten gains, while holding out their hand to the government for the tax incentives and bursaries (which they obviously get) while the plebs continue to run the tax dollar generator to pick up the tab for them.

Oh how I miss those heady days when Micosoft Ofiice (Word, Excel & Powerpoint) had to be installed using 42 'floppy' discs (which cost around £1/$1 each back then if you wanted to backup your precious original installation discs) and Office ran comfortably on a 486DX System with 4MB RAM. Of course,, at that time a 16MB RAM upgrade boost would have cost a similar price to the current 16GB DDR5 price, so was out of reach for many home users; and an 80GB Hard Drive (Spinner) cost more tha the currently inflated 1TB SSD price. The more times change, the more they seem to stay the same

Funny. I was about to post the very same video on this thread. Another glimmer of hope on the horizon, I suppose. Still, I wonder. We have no assurance that this won't simply capitulate to the AI moguls. One thing is certain: We won't be seeing prices for brand new system memory go back to what they were three years ago. I would be surprised if they even went to half of what they are now.

And we have no idea about tariffs or even outright blocks on CMXT RAM. A high enough tariff, and no one will buy CXMT, or else everyone else will raise prices. Not what we need.

After listening to what Steve and Wendell have to say about CMXT it really isn't looking good. I'm not inclined to think that the big three, after experiencing exponentially huge profits in the past couple of years, won't being doing all that is in their power to ensure that the competition is contained. Corporatism is opposed to free enterprise. Another example of "rules for thee but not for me".

And you actually think that a Chinese company with majority ownership by the Chinese government is an example of Free Enterprise. Sorry, but that idea simply doesn't wash!

Not for two reasons.

1. "Military-Civilian" fusion. Every company is subject to orders of the CCP.
2. Massive export drive, to keep the economy from getting worse because of overcapacity in manufacturing. Side benefit is that it destroys companies in other countries.

On a global model, comparatively speaking, yes. Monopolies don't like competition of any sort, but they are certainly happy to take handouts from the same government that will not hesitate to tell small business to "sink or swim". Micron made record profits in the same year that they shouldered US tax payers to fund the building of new manufacturing facilities. Where I come from we have a name for that: CORPORATE WELFARE. Meanwhile, Micron closes business to the end user — the same end user expected to finance the company currently making record profits while the end user shoulders the subsidy.
