Quit looking! I fixed this myself, but since I typed a massive description of the problem, I'll post it anyway in case it helps someone else.
But first, this is how I fixed it.
I had set netplwiz when I got the computer over a year ago to not require a password.
I had to reset it to require a password.
There had been a change by MS to not show the check box without modifying the registry, so I did that to get the checkbox back. *
Rebooted, then checked the box in netplwiz to require the password be entered.
Robooted and signed in
Unchecked the box in netplwiz to not require the password be entered.
Got the box to enter my user id and password
Entered my email address as the user id and entered the password.
Rebooted and the computer came up normally to the desktop as it always had.
* regedit to show the netplwiz password check box HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\PasswordLess\Device
DevicePassordLessBuildVersion REG_DWORD Modify it to 0, I had a duplcate of this DWORD, both set to 2. I set one to zero and deleted the other.
The following is what I was going to post before fixing it:
This morning I turned on my Notebook and saw on the Lock Screen: We are unable to connect right now. Please check you network and try again later.
I pressed OK and saw the sign in screen. It showed my user id (mjlei) which is the beginning of my email address (and the folder name under USERS in explorer) and the enter password space. I could continue to sign in from there. I also noticed in the lower left corner, my name twice. Clicking the bottom one brings up the incomplete login screen with just user mjlei. Clicking the top one brings up the screen to enter my pin. If I enter the pin all is well.
Also on the Lock Screen that is showing my name twice, if I just wait a minute, the screen that asks for my pin will pop up and it will work from there.
How do I get rid of the second incomplete sign in? Never mind - I fixed it
