Weird things with notepad

If I open Notepad it opens it with tabs with every notepad file if opened since I reinstalled windows 6 weeks ago. What's going on? (I don't remember it ever having tabs before).

Also if I hit start and type notepad it brings up 2 results one with a capital and one without - is that correct?

Also some in the tabs come up totally garbled others fine.

No this has been ongoing 6 weeks since I reinstalled Windows.

Yes, Notepad has been updated to have tabs now, I find this to be a useful addition. By default it opens your previous session with all the tabs you had open then, this I find annoying. You can turn this behaviour off.

Close tabs and save or decline to save tabs before you close notepad, which is what you have to do even without tabs. If there is nothing in notepad when you close it, there will be nothing when you open it.

Notepad is from Microsoft and comes as part of Windows. Notepad++ is a 3rd party app that has more features than Notepad.

I wanted to clarify the subject because you wrote about
Notepad
in your OP but then seemed to agree with post #2's reference to
Notepad++


As Bree said, if you are talking about the Windows 10 app then that is called
Notepad

I don't have Notepad++ but this is what comes up when I type Notepad into the start menu.

This is normal. I checked and both of my desktops show the same thing. I'm not sure how Notepad++ came up when the thread topic states Notepad.

Open Notepad (with tabs) and then click on the Settings gear icon:


Then click on When Notepad starts


Uncheck Open content from the previous session by selecting Open a new window.

That should stop Notepad from opening documents that were open when you closed Notepad last.

First thing I do with every new installation is to perform exactly the change that @trumpy81 noted. I am not at all a fan of the new default behavior .

I thought I would feel the same way, but I find it useful when creating posters or websites for clients. As I try to work on only one project at a time, having all my notes (which are in various txt files) open when I open the tab enabled Notepad, is actually time saving.

Yeah I agree, opening previous files can be useful, but I tend to do my website coding in Visual Studio Code or NoteTab Pro rather than Notepad.

VS Code opens all files in the project as a file/folder tree and it integrates with Github for easy uploading, file revision, etc.
NoteTab Pro will open whatever you tell it to ... lol

Notepad++ is still the best!
It re-opens with highlights saved, scroll position saved..., hell, it even re-opens with the cursor blinking in the position I closed it at!!!

But @Edwin, you're just lazy ... lol

I also like Notepad++.
Gone are the days I code in Notepad.
The last 4 clients I have had, have insisted on using @Squarespace. A most dreadful design process. In my opinion. A P.O.S. I’d sooner use Mobirise and become a beta tester like the rest of the paying clients appear to be.
I find the new business models genius. Create an application and step out of the way, forcing the user community to fend for themselves and create community forums for the applications. Squarespace and Mobirise are two perfect examples.

This is why I llike the tabs, so many things to consider when using Squarespace, I need all the nonsense opened.
