Solved What are top things to speed up windows 24H2?

Back to using win 11 24H2 exclusively (from Mint)(can't video edit per my requirements/needs) and thought I'd just check.

I use Bitdefender free and StartAllBack. I use a non MS logon.

While I am mostly firefox and Thunderbird(both current), I do weekly use Davinci Resolve or Wondershare Fiilmora for video editing for YouTube. - 6 minute render - no big deal.

I have avoided going to 25H2 as I see no reason. For 24H2 I am current via WuMgr. Otherwise I tend to use win "as is" - without using the tons of various mods that are out there - StartAllBack is the only exception.

It might help if you could say what you find to be 'slow' on what appears to be a nippy PC?

You do not need a 3rd party Anti-Virus, Windows Security (Defender) works just as well as Bitdefender, and has a far smaller Foot Print and does not flag false positives. Windows Security is a Part of Windows and gets updated with Windows Update regularly, it also is Free.

By Non Microsoft Login you mean a Local account?

Download Crystal Disk Info and or DiskGenius both in my signature. Select each of your drives separately and view the SMART Info on each drive. If any drive is less than GOOD it needs to be replaced. Bad sectors on any of your drives can cause slow downs .

There is no advantage in not updating to 25h2,
Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows 11 24H2—both Home and Pro editions—according to this support page, with the end date slated for October 13th, 2026. That’s when the next major Windows 11 update will be released. (This was also the case in 2025 when support for Windows 11 23H2 ended in the fall.)

Just use the 25H2 Enablement Package from MS.
It takes 3 seconds and a reboot and you're done.

25H2 is already installed within 24H2, it's just not enabled.
The enablement package just... enables 25H2.

MS did the same thing from 22H2 to 23H2.

You could disable some Services that you may not be using. Here's one guide that tells you what you possible can disable:

If your PC is running sluggishly with that kind of hardware featured in "My Computer" then you definitely have a problem. Run Task Manager and click on Performance. Check your speed. Are you lagging? Do you have slow internet speed? Are apps taking a long time to open and close? Are you running XMP? Are you overclocking your RAM? Can you boost your speed from the BIOS? "Speed" covers a lot of venues.

1 - my bad - poor title - replace "speed up" with improve or enhance or something of the sort. I do not notice it to be sluggish or laggy at any point. I simply thought that since I hadn't used win for a long time, I would ask!

3 - In WuMgr, "win 11 25H2 KB5083769" had been sitting there for months. I imaged my system and installed it. Took maybe 20 min including download.
I get(see below) - do you still think I need to "activate" it??? I tested it and Valley ran fine so I think it is fine. I will have to see if it added anything untoward like Edge or whatever but so far looks good.

No. That's the latest non-Insider version.
If it needed activated, you would see a notification in the lower right of your screen.

Newer versions of Windows don't have a solution; only this older 21h2 version, which uses little resource and is fast, is available.

As Pepanee commented, it's highly unlikely you'll gain anything.. especially if the service you choose to disable isn't actually running and using resources- so do check for that.

On tenforums.com, Paul Black did an extensive exercise with services there- you might be interested to scan that for background.

As for enhancing..well.. a way better start menu is Open Shell, and then you can modify the layout/appearance so it looks a lot more like Win 10, shoudl you wish. See Ghot's thread here:

Myself, the first thing I would do is get rid of Co Pilot and uninstall Bit Locker and One Drive. These are personal preferences so there are times that I am reluctant to suggest them. There are tutorials here on how to do this safely. In theory, if you have extensive hardware designed to function with these three things I mentioned you shouldn't be taking a big hit in performance BUT that's theory. If you need them keep them. Personal preference always takes precedence in such cases.

Performance varies depending on threat samples and the like as well.

I like Kaspersky Premium because of all the features it uses and that I can extend it to all the PCs on my home network. It also has a very user friendly VPN. I wouldn't say that it is for everyone but I'm familiar with it and it doesn't slow down my PC's performance. There have been times where Kaspersky has caught attempted intrusions in the past that Microsoft missed. To be fair, I have not had this experience with Windows 11 and based on what I've read about MS VS and seen on the half dozen Win 11 PCs in my home Microsoft provides excellent AV protection.

Yeah on the services - that takes research and trial and guess...
I'll pass on Kaspersky - Bitdefender has worked very well for me for years.
Actually, rather than trust AV's ratings I would ask around and then try/test. That's what I did when I realized WD was killing me.
All I think I did for copilot was remove the taskbar icon and ignore it. Bitlocker doesn't seem to affect me so I ignore it. OneDrive I think I removed but I forget, but I don't get prompts for it I think...
Yeah it's a nice PC but frankly I wish I hadn't gotten it and just stuck with my P15s! - takes up much less space. But I couldn't sell this one and get much back.

Not sure I want to take a chance on 1.5% compromised.
Myself I now use Eset after many years with Kaspersky until the USA banned it.
