For many years I have been doing the DTP for the local village news. This a 24 page A5 booklet published monthly. Over the years that I've been doing it I have used CorelDraw, Indesign and in recent years, Publisher.
I now face two issues. Microsoft is phasing out Publisher and while suggesting Word as an alternative it admits it is not really up to the job! The other issue is that after 40 years of doing it, and given my age, I will need to start looking for a successor.
So, any suggestions please as to what software. It doesn't have to be that complex. CorelDraw and Indesign are too sophisticated. Publisher is ideal and I don't need to use many of its features. The news is mainly text with the odd graphic.
I could post a link to the web site where it appears (it is printed and put on the village web site) or add a PDF copy her but that would reveal my identity!

That's a toughie!
While there are many excellent programs out there, as Publisher alternatives, free or paid..., you'd virtually be starting from scratch as many of these programs are not compatible with .pub files, or, have severe limitations!
• I suggest keep using Publisher until October 2026 and beyond, if possible..., then blow up that bridge when you get to it.
• You might try designing in PowerPoint and exporting to the proper format, if possible.
• As a fresh start alternative, I suggest Affinity Publisher. (you would have to export all your .pub files as PDF's then import them to Affinity, though)

I'd be curious to know if you could still install it if you have a separate permanent license for Publisher (not part of Microsoft 365).

I use Publisher rather extensively and losing it is going to mean having to rewrite docs that took me months and months to create.

Depends upon the program, some versions of Microsoft Office could be installed on "a computer and a portable device" at the same time and in control of the same user.

Microsoft Word is fine for creating publications of various types. It’s just a matter of working out where all the tools are. Word toolbars and tabs are customisable if wanting editing/publishing tools all in one place.

I have some requirements for placing certain elements at very precise locations. For example, I might place a box so that the upper left corner is located 2.05 inches from the top and 1.72 inches from the left side. In addition, the box must have a height of 4 inches precisely by 6.15 inches wide.

In addition, text must be perfectly aligned to elements within that box.

That's just one very simplified example. So far, I have not found a way to do all this in Word.

older versions of Microsoft Office have standalone versions of publisher
2007, 2013 etc

which one would suit i am unsure of.

LibreOffice draw could be used as a replacement
but there would be a learning curve with it.

I think, if you have a Retail version of Office 2021, (StackSocial), Publisher will continue to work beyond Oct 2026..., it just won't receive feature updates.

That is also my understanding. Publisher (as far as I know) can be bought as standalone software.

Either way, I really don't care cuz I still have the Affinity Suite, but, I still think it's a boner move on MS's part!
