I don't know if anyone else has thought of doing this so here goes: -
Through my working life I kept my CV (Resume) up to date since half my working life was spent working as a contract mechanical design engineer and the other half on staff basis. I worked in designing machines for car tyre production, as a product development engineer, as a designer for steel chimneys up to 200ft (60m) high, as a designer in Nuclear waste management and clean-up, creating engineering flow diagrams in the petro-chemical and chemical industries plus other mechanical design jobs.
The contract nature meant that I had about 15 jobs before I retired and I thought "Why waste my CV? Why not use it to tell my grandchildren what Grandad did for a living? I know I asked questions from my parents about what they did as well as my grandparents.
After my CV was no longer needed as a CV (due to retirement) I started to add to it all the details about my life that were not relevant to a CV but would be of interest to my family. I added the address and circumstances of my birth, my primary school, my secondary school, my engineering apprenticeship and training school, where and how I met my wife, where we were married and being confirmed into the Church of England (I am not religious. I just did what was expected at the time).
I gave this CV, now renamed to "A Life History", to my children simply to use to answer questions that my grandchildren might ask about me in the future. Unbeknown to me one of them used it to create a hard-bound photo album titled "Book of your Life", which was presented to me at a family meal. It brought me to tears. The book was based on the UK TV series "This is Your Life" featuring Michael Aspel from many years ago. You can see my face superimposed on the photo below.
I just thought other people may be interested in doing the same for their family/grandchildren.
