I'm using this browser based on Firefox. What do you think? Is it worth it? In theory, there's no telemetry in it.

Sure! Here's a detailed explanation in English of the differences between Firefox and Floorp:

🌐 Core Foundation

  • Firefox: Developed by Mozilla, it's a widely-used open-source browser focused on privacy, speed, and standards compliance.
  • Floorp: A Japanese fork of Firefox, meaning it’s built on Firefox’s core engine but adds extra features and customization.

🛠️ Customization & Features

  • Firefox:
    • Offers basic customization like themes and extensions.
    • Prioritizes simplicity and user-friendliness.
  • Floorp:
    • Adds advanced customization options:
      • Vertical tabs
      • Dual sidebars
      • Workspaces
      • Custom hotkeys
      • CSS tweaks for advanced users
    • Inspired by browsers like Vivaldi and Opera, but keeps Firefox’s engine.

🔒 Privacy & Security

  • Firefox:
    • Strong privacy features like Total Cookie Protection and Enhanced Tracking Protection.
    • Transparent data practices as a non-profit.
  • Floorp:
    • Also privacy-focused, with built-in HTTPS Everywhere, native ad blocker, and no data collection.
    • Designed to be even stricter on privacy by default.

🚀 Performance

  • Firefox:
    • Uses the Quantum engine for fast performance.
    • Performance can vary depending on system and extensions.
  • Floorp:
    • Claims to be faster than Firefox, despite adding more features.
    • Uses the same Quantum engine but optimized differently by its developers.

🧑‍💻 Developer Philosophy

  • Firefox:
    • Maintained by Mozilla Foundation with a global team.
    • Focuses on stability and broad compatibility.
  • Floorp:
    • Developed by a smaller team in Japan.
    • More experimental and responsive to user feedback.
    • Regular updates and community-driven improvements.

🧭 Summary Table

FeatureFirefoxFloorp
EngineMozilla QuantumMozilla Quantum
CustomizationModerateExtensive (tabs, sidebars, CSS)
PrivacyStrongVery strong (adblocker, HTTPS, no data)
PerformanceFastClaimed faster than Firefox
OriginMozilla Foundation (Global)Ablaze Inc. (Japan)
Ideal ForGeneral usersPower users, privacy enthusiasts

If you like Firefox but wish it had more flexibility and speed, Floorp might be worth trying. Want help installing or configuring it?

Unlike Firefox portable (from PortableApps.com), Floorp portable doesn't let me use the AllowMultipleInstances=true setting in its .ini file. So, Floorp and Floorp portable are useless to me because I need to run multiple instances concurrently (and separately, in separate sandboxes to be able to achieve separate, flexible, additional layers of advanced privacy and security) with Sandboxie-Plus. The same also applies to the normal edition of Firefox. This is because combining things like the Firefox Multi-Account Containers extension with some other things like Narsil (from Codeberg.org) and the uBlock Origin extension, for example, doesn't always cut the mustard for me.

As an avid watcher of streaming sites (Netflix, Max, Peacock etc) the lack of DRM is a killer for me. It's why I just harden Firefox and stay away from forks

Floorp's DRM Limitations

  • No Widevine license: Floorp developers don't have Google's certification for Widevine, so protected content may not play properly or at high resolutions.
  • Amazon Prime Video: Works only up to 720p due to limited DRM support.
  • Netflix and Spotify: May not work correctly, especially on Linux systems.

⚙️ Partial Workaround

You can try enabling limited DRM support manually:

  1. Type about:config in the address bar.
  2. Search for and set the following preferences:
    • browser.eme.ui.enabled = true
    • media.eme.enabled = true
  3. Restart the browser after making these changes.
Even with this, DRM support will still be limited and may not work with all services.
