What just happened?

While I was using my PC (simply going through my files) the second I clicked on a notepad the screen went dark and the PC made a very loud fan noise, switched it off using the power button on the case and turned it back on, everything seems to be working fine, what was the reason for this?

You need more of ze experimentation.

Try clicking on the text file again and see if the problem repeats.
Try a different text file as well.

What was IN the text file?

Or were you using notepad to open some other kind of file?

It was just text which I reopened again and nothing happened.

Make a note of exactly when this problem first happened, and if it happens again, note that as well.
It could just be a one time glitch.

If it happens repeatedly... then you should probably start worrying about it.
But just a one time burp... I wouldn't worry about it too much.

If it still worries you... you can check in Event Viewer, and look for events that happened, at the time this occurred.
In the Taskbar search box, you can type: reliability ...and then view the Reliability History, and see if that shows anything.
If this notepad thing happened at, say 5PM... check Event Viewer and Reliability History for things that happened at 5PM.

But, computers have weird glitches every now and then.
Mostly, they're one time things.

Windows 11 is approx. 50 million lines of code. All that has to happen is a tiny burp, and strange things can happen.
As you discovered; most of the time... a simple reboot fixes things.

I'd also move your computer a little further away from the wall.
Like maybe 4 or 5 inches away. So intake and exhaust have room to breathe.

It's hard to tell in the video... how close it is to the wall.



I give my computers, plenty of breathing room.

Thanks yeah it has enough breathing room it's just not that visible in the video.

I have had the fan speed up and no screen at random times, when I boot up with a slave drive/D drive attached. I know It will boot into the OS, because I can hear the startup sound, but black screen. So, I just have to switch off the power supply, and sometimes this works the first time, and sometimes I have to kill the power multiple times, then it will boot normally with the D drive still attached. It never acts this way, when I'm just running/booting my C drive with my Samsung 980 m.2 on a card, only "sometimes" when I attach a D drive, go figure!
