    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

And what about AOEMEI? Safe?
I tried Acronis. My system at the time was 80GB. I checked that the input was all correct, it was trying to backup 900GB of files. I couldn't work out why. It initially had the right size but kept increasing every coupe of minutes until it was around 900GB. Slow… so slow. And odd.

Same solution with Hasleo , for AoMEI also ; only using the bootmedia .............these programs are not installed ! :wink:

Hi folks

just use the bootable stand alone version of GPARTED (100% Free) -- even if you can't use or have never used Linux. The GUI looks almost identical to Windows partition managers and it can copy any sort of file system (no need to even format target disk) . Has a command line too.

100% no problem in manipulating Windows NTFS partitions etc. Simply create bootable USB from downloadable iso and you are in business.

Copy partition is fine and cloning disks OK too -- in the command line simply type dd if=<input file / partition> of=<output file or partition> bs=1024M status=progress.

Use /dev/sda etc for cloning the whole disk. Partition copying -- simply from the GUI select copy and then paste to unallocated space on target drive -- no formatting etc required - it handles pretty well all known file systems.

For backup of partitions simply set the of<parameters> to a file. Then on restore use that as if=parameter>.

For Meerkat lovers -particularly addressed to UK viewers who confuse Market with Meerkat : (I think I prefer the Meerkats to the financial bods over on that island currently -- another issue though) .

Except for O&O ShutUp10 - i wouldn't use their other software (especially critical apps) - even if it was free. Even tho, for quite some time it used to be a top recommendation of mine (for O&O Defrag). Reason being: bad/incompetent support (something you pay for while buying an app) - which end-up giving me head-aches - while dealing with the aftermath - since i was the one who recommend it (the issues in question was software related - so using the support which they paid for seemed like the go to - yet, the ones from O&O didn't seem to know how to solve the issue or even bother to look for a reasonable solution - other than a refund - which can be far from a viable solution while trying to solve issues caused by the app). Now imagine a back-up tool causing serious issue - and while calling for support - they'll just try to brush you off by offering you a refund - as the only solution to your issue,

See my post earlier. I have used both. I haven't done a system image restore using ShadowMaker but I can confirm that the bootable rescue disk works (I made a small partition at the front of my backup drive and have it installed there). I have also used the Copy Disk Wizard feature on Partition Wizard...it works but I still ended up having to do a Windows Repair by Reinstall as something happened to the recovery partition.

I've likely made this point previously, so no repeats after this.

There are at least two freeware programmes easily available that will BLOCK any outgoing activity (ie. phone-homes) from your PC until you let it out. I would expect there are quite a few more. Free Firewall or TinyWall both do this on a highly detailed, granular level. This actually engages both Google and MS to deny access to their supposedly accessible websites because they can't log one's IP address and match it to whatever activity one is doing - snoopy, snoopy of them of course.

So I load FF as part of StartUp, with the default "Don't allow till I say so". Consequently using Macrium, Hasleo or Aomei is free of snoop risk, in my view. For those who may wonder if FF or TW themselves are snoopware, the response is that these programmes block themselves as well until you decide. I've been using FF for over 5 years now and have not seem any untoward phone-home that I haven't tagged.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
I've been testing MiniTool's ShadowMaker. It can install a recovery version to Windows boot manager but every option is disabled!

It can create a rescue media but that turns out to be unbootable. I used the USB thumbdrive that wotks for Macrium Reflect and DiskGenius but it wont' boot from Windows recovery options or from my Bios.

Besides Macrium i also use R-Drive Image. It is very reliable and a no fuss almost as good as Macrium alternative. It has been around for many years and never given me problems.
