I am trying to secure erase my 8tb drive but it will take too long. I am not choosing any high security algorithms just fill 0 but it seems will take very long time, any fast solution ?

Nope.
Set up the comp to write zeros to the drive, then go to sleep.
It "may" be finished by morning.

If I recall... on an AMD FX-8350, it took about 1.5 hours to write zeros (one pass), to a 1TB internal drive.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
It'll go a lot faster on a USB 3 dock than a USB 2 dock, but once you're using an interface faster than the drive can write, it takes however long it takes.

What if you can't overwrite it, though, like if it broke and you're sending it in for replacement? Not needing to overwrite it is one of the advantages to using FDE like Bitlocker.

If you are in a hurry you can try WD Data Life Guard QUICK ERASE.

WD Data life guard
QUICK ERASE writes zeros to the first and last million sectors of the drive
FULL ERASE writes zero to the entire drive

WD Data life guard diagnostics quick or full erase?

Why bother unless worried about drives being stolen? Even then bitlocker would be more secure?

You wanna sell it?

There's no fast way to "securely erase/nuke" a HDD that big. That's just it - takes time to cover so many sectors - even if it's zeros all the way (which is WAY faster than so called military grade - data nuke :).

No. My point was that if the drive had been encrypted, you wouldn't need to erase it before parting with it. That said, I specifically brought up the scenario of being unable to erase a broken drive, and you were returning it for warranty replacement. It would also give you peace of mind if the drive were stolen. It's for these reasons I encrypt all my drives. However, you never know what the future holds, so if I were able to erase it, I would, but really, that's just my paranoia talking. I mean, who's going to put a drive in storage indefinitely waiting for a Bitlocker exploit? (Rhetorical question. I'm not trying to start a discussion of that.)

Are wanting to use the drive quickly? If not most any software will do the job. I use CCleaner drive wiper set to three times overwrite and just let it run in the background to completion for secure erasure. Of course I'm not doing 8 TB, but if you want secure erasure for that large a drive, there's a price to be paid.

I know that this doesn't help in your situation, but I just wanted to point out that this is a selling point for SEDs (Self Encrypting Drives). When you do a secure erase, all it does is change the security key. Bingo - the drive is effectively erased in about one second.

Yes, I noted that it does not apply to you. But on an SED that would be a moot point because the data is ALWAYS encrypted. You don't have to enable it.

Personally, I cannot imagine why people would want to buy a second hand drive, unless buying from a person they trust.

Please note, I am not suggesting at all that you are untrustworthy (I am sure you are) but if I did not know the seller personally, I would err on side of caution and consider if the price is low enough to take the risk.

You can get a new one with full guarantee for less than £130. I doubt I would be prepared to risk much more than £20-£25 for a second hand drive of unknown pedigree. I have just looked on ebay and bid prices for second hand 8 TB drives are as high as £75 or more!

I think people are crazy to be willing to pay that much for second hand goods like hard drives with no guarantees.

Still, if you are selling on the open market, good luck to you.

Truly Caveat Emptor territory.

You are right to wipe the drives if it contains sensitive data - I use diskpart clean all command which is pretty effective and about as fast as you can do it - still going to be hours for sure.

Sure for first point.

Re second point smart health reports for hdds do not tell the whole story - hdds fail for other reasons that write errors e.g. interface electronics. Still some checks I suppose are better than none.

Good luck on selling.

I know that this doesn't help in your situation, but I just wanted to point out that this is a selling point for SEDs (Self Encrypting Drives). When you do a secure erase, all it does is change the security key. Bingo - the drive is effectively erased in about one second.

Are self-encrypting drives still a thing? This article is 4 years old now:

With Bitlocker, there's no key to change. If a drive is stolen, or I have to send it in for replacement because it broke, the data's unrecoverable, and I don't have to do anything. That's also true if my PC is stolen, as long as the thief didn't transport it powered on with the drives unlocked like George and the Frogger machine.

Best show ever

Not safe here too so I am using steel cables wiring the entire chassis. I know this is useless if the thieve is a tech guy but the chances is very low :)
