Solved What's happening to my PC when I use Edge. Fans are going crazy.

Here's my situation and it's more aggravating than a problem since I can use an alternate browser. Sometimes late at night when I'm bored I play online slot games, always from the same site play-now | VIP House of Fun
Since the latest version of Edge, cpu use rises, the load goes high, my temps rise and my fans go crazy, even before the games ever load. Disabling extensions (IDM, Roboform, and uBlock origin) makes no difference.

I installed Edge Canary which duplicated the same extentions and everything runs fine as does Firefox.

What about Edge can be causing this?

First things to check:

• Is Edge bar enabled? (I turned this off)
• Is startup boost enabled? (I turned this off)
• Is hardware acceleration enabled?(I turned this on)
• Is efficiency mode enabled?(I turned this off)

May be a combination of those, but I highly suspect they are at least partially responsible. If not, we'll probably need a deeper dive - one thing you could try is to make a duplicate of that profile and open it in Canary (manually recreating a profile will not achieve this, using a direct copy may find that there is an idiosyncrasy somewhere in your settings from something that is only manifesting in this profile, even if you try to faithfully recreate it in a new profile).

I'm on Windows 11 Pro 21H2 22000.652 on a Desktop and a Notebook, not seeing any issue but I'm not a gamer nor do I use Google Chrome, my Browsers are Firefox and Chromium and a few others, Edge only when necessary.

I have sync turned on and when Canary installed everything followed, profile, extentions, favorites. I don't know what the latest update did but now when I use it for that site, it sounds like my PC is going to fly off the desk. Plain old browsing is fine. Guess that site doesn't like some change in Edge....or actually guess the change in Edge doesn't like that site.

I had similar on four or five occasions last week in early hours of the morning UK.
Random 40% - 50% CPU with fans for no apparent reason, I put it down to MS running maintenance of some description and have had no repeat in last couple of days. Latest Edge stable, Win 11 Pro up to date.

Ahhh, sorry, I misread your OP, I thought *you* duplicated, not Canary duplicated from the login. But if a newer update started doing the same thing, a couple of things you can do.

1) Make a new profile just for this site.

2) Make a new profile to copy your data from the old profile into, and then use the new profile as your default if the problem does not recur (don't let Edge restore the data from your old profile, I believe that you ahve to turn of sync and reset it in your old profile so it won't propagate to new profiles with the same login.

3) Use a different browser (I normally hate suggesting this, as people like what they like - for example, I'm a Firefox guy. But, in this case, for a single site, if it works fine without driving your machine crazy, it might be worth it to just use another browser and be done with it).

Speaking of which - does it also happen in Chrome?

Hopefully it is just as Itchy mentions, some sort of weird A/B testing, then. Of course, there are tons of other settings that can be checked as well.

Not a chrome gal. I hate it. That's why it took me so long to try Edge since it's so much like Chrome. My daily driver is Firefox which is fine so it's not a big deal. I was just trying to understand why it did it.

I hate Edge. If IE11+ was still operative, maybe, but Edge SUCKS big style. I would delete it totally but someone said it can screw up something else????

I have two different profiles on one car forum, "for a reason" when I sign into one of my profiles from Chrome, and the other one from Edge, when I close down Edge and go back later, I'm signed into the same profile as Chrome on Edge, go figure that one.

Maybe not - but it would help narrow down if it is an Edge issue, or a more general issue with Chromium-based browsers.

Server-side cookies, maintaining the last login from your machine. It's one of the many proofs that websites are collecting more data from you than they need to.

What I've done to alleviate this a bit is to disallow automatic login from browsers, and use a password manager to handle my logins, which means I get logged out of the site when I leave. It's a bit more of a PITA, but other factors in my browsing habits also help isolate this sort of cross talk, so that when I am logged in to one profile, and another profile, the browser cannot automatically log me in so I control which profile I log into at any given moment.

Hi,
I don't think ie11 or now edge has ever used hardware acceleration worth beans

Doubt any browser does really, firefox included but issues are less noticeable or at least on my machines which I disable hw acceleration anyway out of habit because it's a crap feature.

ThrashZone has a good point - there are arguments for both, but older studies do show that, while Fx and IE GPU acceleration did reduce CPU use, Chromium-based browsers have been known to have both increased CPU usage as well as issues like the browser locking up, and other stuff.

Try turning it off and then restarting the browser and see if your CPU still goes into raging fire mode.
